Physical Geography
Day 1
We will pose and answer geographic questions about our
planet, the distribution and patterns for various world
regions and countries, economic activities, and society’s
ability to control territory using many different graphic
tools.
I will use and understand maps in order to see distribution
patterns and economic activities across the world.
6.3(A) pose and answer geographic questions, including:
Where is it located? Why is it there? What is significant
about its location? How is its location related to the
location of other people, places, and environments?;
6.3(B) pose and answer questions about geographic
distributions and patterns for various world regions and
countries shown on maps, graphs, charts, models, and
databases;
6.3(C) compare various world regions and countries
using data from geographic tools, including maps, graphs,
charts, databases, and models; and
6.5(A) identify and explain the geographic factors
responsible for the location of economic activities in
places and regions;
6.4(E) draw sketch maps that illustrate various places
and regions; and
6.4(F) identify the location of major world countries such
as Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, the United
Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Russia, South
Africa, Nigeria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Iran, India,
Pakistan, the People's Republic of China, the Republic of
China (Taiwan), Japan, North and South Korea,
Indonesia, and Australia.
Types of Maps
Climate is the average weather in an area over time. El Paso is in a semiarid area.

Allows you to see climate regions across large areas.
Climate map
Shows the weather outside for the day or next few days. It is a model used to
predict future weather.

Air Currents affect weather movement.
Shows us how to get from one place to another using roads.

find your way.
Economic/Agricultural Map
Shows what industry and
jobs are available in an area.
Allows us to see the
difference between Urban
(city) living and Rural
(Country) living.
Cuba
Accurate at the time it was made.
Historic Map
Original maps showed the edge of the world with a sea monster guarding it.

Constantly changing as new
governments and regimes take
power.
Physical Map
Identify features of Earth’s
surface:
 Mountains
 Plains
 Bodies of Water
Constantly changing because the
Earth is dynamic. Volcanoes,
tsunamis, erosion, etc.
As unrenewable natural resources are used up, these maps change. Also allows
us to see Urban and rural parts of the area.

Topographical
Show
 Shape
 Elevation
Altitude, how high or low
above or below sea level
something is. Measured in
miles or meters above (+)
below (-) sea level.
Thematic Maps
Helps you
understand:
 World
 People
 Culture
A map showing all the military
bases in the area, a map showing
all the missions in an area, a map
showing all the national parks in
an area.
Geography Tools
Hemispheres are divided north and south using the equator and east and
west along the Prime Meridian.

ASIA
Helps you find a particular location on a map using a letter and number system.
Similar to coordinate grids in math or the game battleship.
MAP GRID
Distance Scale
Maps are not drawn to scale. If they were, they would have to be the same size
as the area they are depicting. Therefore they are drawn to scale. Scale is the
same as proportion in math.
Used to find relative direction on a map.
Compass rose
Remember: to determine the
direction of movement, you MUST be
careful of your starting location and
move from there.
Even though this line can go
northwest or southeast, YOU can
only go one direction on it –
depending on your starting point!
Explains pictures and symbols found on a map. Always look at the map key to
make sure you are reading the map correctly.
