The Czech Republic
Basic facts
• The Czech Republic is located in the middle
(heart) of Europe
• It is a land−locked country (= no border with the
sea) but it is bordered by Germany to the west,
Poland to the north, Slovakia to the east and
Austria to the south
• The country has been traditionally divided into
historical lands - Bohemia, Moravia and Czech
Silesia, the capital is Prague
• It has a population of about 10,5 million
• After the the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in
1992, it became a separated country on January 1
in 1993

• The large coat of arms, the small coat of arms,
Czech flag, the flag of the president of the
Czech Republic
• Czech patron is Saint Wenceslas
• The national anthem is „Kde domov můj“
(Where is my home)
• The national motto is „Pravda vítězí“ (Truth
prevails)
• Other national symbols are crown jewels and
limetree (= lípa)

Geography
• The Czech Republic has a temperate continental
climate with four distinct seasons
• The landscape is varied – it is quite mountainous
around the borders with mountain ranges as the Giant
Mts. (Krkonoše), Šumava, the Ore Mts. (Krušné hory),
Jeseníky. It is flatter in the centre, the lowlands are in
Moravia and central Bohemia
• The highest peak is Sněžka (1,602 m) in the Krkonoše
mountain range
• The major European river the Elbe (Labe) rises in
Krkonoše, too. A number of rivers such as the Vltava
and the Morava flow through the country. There are
many ponds in south Bohemia
• The country often suffers from floods. The land is quite
heavily forested.

• The Czech Republic is a parliamentary representative
democracy
• The Prime Minister is the head of government
• The Parliament is bicameral - the Chamber of Deputies
(200 members) and the Senate (81 members).
• The President of the Czech Republic is Miloš Zeman.
Since 2013 the presidential election is direct, so he is
the first directly elected president.
• The president is a formal head of state with limited
specific powers, most importantly to return bills, he
also appoints the prime minister, as well the other
members of the cabinet on a proposal by the prime
minister.
• The previous Czech presidents were Václav Havel and
Václav Klaus

• The Czech Republic is a member of the EU and
NATO
• Natural resources – black and brown coal
mining, small deposits of oil, gas and uranium
• Machinery industry (Škoda Auto Mladá
Boleslav, Škoda Plzeň, Nošovice, Třinec), steel
production (Vítkovice), food processing.

• Besides common types of fruit, vegetables and
grains also hops and grapevine are grown here
• The currency is a Czech crown.

• The country is divided into 13 regions + the
region of the capital city Prague
• The other big cities are centres of these
regions, e.g. Brno, Ostrava, Plzeň, Liberec etc.
Historical landmarks
• There are numerous castles, palaces and
places of interest presenting different
architectural styles. Some of them have been
listed as UNESCO sights:
• The Historical Centre of Prague, the Historical
Centre of Český Krumlov, the Historical Centre
of Telč, Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape,
Holašovice, Vila Tugendhat in Brno, Kutná
Hora, Litomyšl, Třebíč etc.
• Other popular places of interests are castle

• There are four national parks: Krkonoše NP
(highest mountain range), Šumava NP (glacial
lakes, peat bogs, forests), Bohemian Switzerland
NP (sandstone rock formations), Podyjí NP(valley
and forests near Dyje)
• Other popular destinations are:
• Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise) is a popular area
for hiking and climbing (interesting rock
formations)
• Cave systems are in Bohemian Karst (near
Beroun) and Moravian Karst (abyss Macocha,
Punkva river)
• Ponds near Třeboň, Jizerské hory, SOOS, Beskydy
