The Original Strategy – Point-to-Point Radio-Linked Telephony
DRCS = Digital Radio Concentrator Service (System)
HCRC = High Capacity Radio Concentrator (System)
 Developed by Telecom Australia Research Labs (TRL) < 1983
 Rolled out in the Australian Inland > 250 km from Capital Cities
 1.5 GHz (L Band) Bi-directional Point-to-Point Radio Links
 Provides Telephony and (very limited) Data connectivity
 All Homestead Connections concentrated to a Local Exchange
 Distance from Local Exchange to Homestead can exceed 600 km
 Maximum 22 Homestead Connections per System

The Original Strategy – Point-to-Point Radio-Linked Telephony
 1.427 GHz to 1.535 GHz Reserved (L) Band in Radio Spectrum
 2 sets of 22 Adjacent Channel Banks, spaced at 2 MHz
 Return Channel 60.5 MHz offset from Send Channels
 Send Channel Bank separated 16.5 MHz from Receive Channel Bank
 Radio Bandwidth limited to 1 Dedicated Channel Pair per Homestead
 Extremely low utilisation of available System Bandwidth
 Alarm Monitoring and Control is very Primitive

Revitalising the DRCS / HCRC
The Original Strategy – Point-to-Point Radio-Linked Telephony
 Exchange Unit interfaces with Subscribers Line Equipment
 Exchange Unit has Primitive Alarm Monitoring / Control Interface
 Exchange Unit very different from Node Unit
 Node Unit basically a Back-to-Back Radio to/from Voice Frequency
 Homestead Unit is very different from Exchange Unit or Repeater Unit
 Each Homestead Unit is a Radio to/from Voice Frequency
 Each Homestead Unit also a mini-Remote Telephony Interface
 Data Speed crippled by Multiple mod/demod Interfaces

The Revitalised Strategy – Point-to-Point Radio-Linked Ethernet
 Homesteads connected with Reliable Broadband Internet
 Broadband Connection is Low Latency, Generally >100 Mb/s
 Homesteads now have IP Ethernet LAN Capability
 Homestead VoIP Phone connects Directly to Homestead Ethernet LAN
 Allows Multiple Computers, Video Conferences, IP-PABX, Wi-Fi, 4G etc.
 Facilitates Efficient Farm Business, Education, Medical etc. services
 Significantly Improves inland Mental Health, Welfare facilities

Revitalising the DRCS / HCRC
The Revitalised Strategy – Point-to-Point Radio-Linked Ethernet
 Utilises Existing Mast and Antenna Infrastructure (doubles the active life)
 Very Low Maintenance Costs (far less expensive than Satellite overheads)
 Very Low Latency (far lower than Satellite transmission)
 Exchange, Node and Homestead Units essentially a Simple Modular Structure
 All Radio Bandwidths Optimally (and Maximally) Utilised
 Intelligent Alarm Monitoring, Control, with Simple Management
 Local Exchange Interface to Edge Router (direct to Inter-Exchange Network)

The Revitalised Strategy – Point-to-Point Radio-Linked Ethernet
 1.5 GHz Bi-directional Point-to-Point Radio Links
 1.427 GHz to 1.535 GHz Reserved Band in Spectrum
 Very Simple (reliable) Radio and (inexpensive) Filter Structure
 Full Radio Bandwidth Fully Utilised Everywhere in DRCS
 Down Channel = 1.429 GHz to 1.479 GHz (50 MHz wide)
 Up Channel = 1.483 GHz to 1.533 GHz (50 MHz wide)
 Up / Down Channel minimum Spacing = 4 MHz
