eIGeR project - summary
• EU Structural funds - Operational programme R & DI (Research
and Development for Innovations) - 85% , administred and
supported by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports – 15%
• The project is listed in national roadmap of large infrastructures
(responds to the lack of data storage centers and computing
resources)
• Monitoring indicator: number of organizations using the
reconstructed e-infrastructure (target value 60)
• Preparatory phase: 1. 1. 2010 – 30. 4. 2011
• Implementation phase: 1. 5. 2011 – 31. 10. 2013
• Sustainability phase: 1. 11. 2013 – 31. 10. 2018
eIGeR project – summary (cont.)
• The project is focused mainly for investment (advanced services
and e-infrastructure applications are covered by complementary
project)
• Total planned expenditure of the project: 754 million CZK / 27.9
million EUR* (of which eligible costs CZK 599.285 million / 22.2
million EUR*)
• Total eligible investment expenditures: 493 million CZK / 18.3
million EUR*
• Total eligible non-investment expenditures: 41.7 million CZK / 1.5
million EUR*
• Total ineligible expenditures: 139.3 million CZK / 5.2 million
EUR*
(*) exchange rate 27 CZK/EUR was used
Aims of the project:
Qualitative and quantitative improvement of regional access to national and
European research and development infrastructures
●
Significant improvement of Communication Infrastructure in the regions
in order to better utilize pan-European network GÉANT
●
●
Building a National Grid Infrastructure (NGI)
●
Create storage infrastructure for R&D
●
Expansion of the existing system for remote collaboration
Commissioning of new services (mainly in storage and computational
domain)
●
Project activity Communication infrastructure:
Increasing capacity of communication infrastructure and access interfaces
(installation of terabit routers with 100 Gbps support)
●
Acquisition and installation of terabit routers, network interfaces and DWDM
system to locations Brno, Hradec Králové, Olomouc, Liberec, Plzeň, České
Budějovice, Ostrava, Pardubice, Zlín, Ústí nad Labem and Jihlava
●
Reconstruction / upgrade of main DWDM optical transmission circuit system
Praha - Brno - Olomouc - Hradec Králové - Praha (it is possible simultaneously
transmit 80 wavelengths - before the project was only 32)
●
Reconstruction / upgrade of management and monitoring systems for DWDM
and IP/MPLS networks
●
●
Opportunity to build a user end-to-end channels with high throughput
• Increasing redundancy and complementing core network routers CRS-3/16 and
main DWDM nodes
CESNET2 Optical Topology
CESNET2 IP/MPLS Topology
Project activity National Grid Infrastructure (NGI):
• Acquisition of computing cluster in Plzeň and its subsequent extension
of accumulated funds
• Integration of the cluster into the NGI and EGI
• Acquisition of application software packages (compilers, debuggers,
Fluent, Matlab, GPFS)
• Acquisition of GPU computing cluster for NGI in Ostrava
• Integration with other components of e-infrastructure (especially data
storages and communication infrastructure)
NGI Resources
Project activity Data Storage Infrastructure:
• Building a system of three geographically separate data repositories
interconnected by high-speed network (robust solution enabling
backups at remote locations)
• Based on the HSM principle (Hierarchical Storage Management) - a
combination of disk arrays and tapes
• Acquisition of HSM storage systems in locations Plzeň, Jihlava and
Brno
• Total raw capacity about 21 PB
• Technologically heterogeneous infrastructure; standalone tender for
every storage system
Data Storage Infrastructure
Project activity Collaboration environment:
• Increasing capacity and improving videoconferencing
infrastructure in the regions
• Acquisition of webconferencing server
• Acquisition of multipoint videoconferencing unit - MCU
• Purchase of unit for sessions recording and streaming
• Acquisition of solution for videoconferencing software clients
(H.323/SIP)
Project sustainability:
• Duration: 5 years from the completion of the implementation
phase
• Commitment to keep the purchased equipment in operation (at
least at the same technical level)
• Need to keep the target value of the monitoring indicator
• Any financial costs are covered by CESNET (operating costs as
well as potential reinvestment), spending of subsidies only take
place during the implementation phase of the project
