Network Interface Card (NIC)
◦ Installs in PC and provides access to network
media
◦ Must match the network application (Ethernet,
token ring, etc.)
◦ Must match network speed (10/100Mbps)
◦ Fiber NICs must match connection type (SC, ST,
etc.)
◦ Copper based NICs cost $5-20
◦ Fiber based NICs cost $90-120
◦ Provides physical MAC address for layer 2

Transceiver (media converter)
◦ Converts from one media to
another
◦ Coax -> fiber
◦ UTP -> fiber
◦ Coax -> UTP
Gateway (application
converter)
◦ Converts from one net app to
another
◦ Ethernet to token ring
◦ Ethernet to ATM
◦ Token ring to FDDI

Repeater
◦ Receives a digital signal on
one port and regenerates
it for retransmission at full
power on another port

HUB
◦ A multi-port repeater
◦ Receives a digital signal on
one port and regenerates
it for retransmission at full
power on all other ports

7
Bridge
◦ Connects two or more
network segments
◦ Allows only traffic
destined for the other
segment to pass
◦ Reduces number of
transmissions per
segment
◦ Functionality is provided
by switches today

Switch
◦ Used to connect hosts
together
◦ Keeps a table of the physical
MAC addresses according to
each port
◦ Forwards transmissions from
one port to only the
appropriate destination port
based on MAC
◦ Functionally segments a
communication between two
hosts from the rest of the
network
◦ Can provide full speed
transmission between
different pairs simultaneously

9
Router
◦ Used to connect networks
together
◦ Keeps a table of the logical IP
addresses attached to each
port
◦ Forwards transmissions from
one port to only the
appropriate destination port
based on IP
◦ Acts as the front door to your
network

Server
◦ An individual computer host that provides
services to network clients at layers 4-7 of the
OSI model
◦ Examples:
Domain Controller
DHCP
DNS
Web Server
FTP Server

Infrared
◦ Line of sight
◦ Uses wavelength longer than
visible light in the
electromagnetic spectrum
◦ Pro: Relatively inexpensive,
high bandwidth, no FCC
license required, easy to
install, good security,
portable
◦ Con: Line of sight must be
maintained, very susceptible
to weather interference which
causes attenuation

13
Microwave
◦ Line of sight
◦ High frequency (GHz) in the
electromagnetic range used by
satellite dish antennae
◦ Orbital or terrestrial based
◦ Pro: very high bandwidth,
transmission can travel long
distances, point to point or
broadcast transmission
◦ Con: Expensive transmission
equipment, line of sight required,
very susceptible to atmospheric
interference which causes
attenuation, propagation delay,
requires an FCC license

14
Radio Frequency (RF)
◦ Omni directional
◦ Common frequencies include
2.4GHz and 5.72-5.85GHz
◦ Defined by IEEE 802.11
◦ Used by phones and Wi-Fi
◦ Pro: no line of sight required,
low cost, very flexible
◦ Con: susceptible to jamming
or eavesdropping (not
secure), susceptible to other
radio frequency interference,
limited range

Wireless Access Point
◦ This device extends
access to a wired
network to wireless
devices
◦ Has only one RJ45 port
◦ This type of device is
commonly used to
extended existing
networks where routing
and switching services
are already provided

Combo
◦ This device combines a
router, a switch, and a
wireless access point
into one device
◦ This type of device is
commonly used for
home networks that
wish to share a cable or
DSL connection
◦ Consumer electronic
stores often refer to
this as just a wireless
router
