Lesson 1 – Part 3
Domain Names
Domain names are used to identify one or
more IP addresses (213.175.211.12). For
example, the domain
name niu.com.mt represents that IP address.
Domain names are used in URLs to identify
particular Web pages.
Every domain name has a suffix that indicates
which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to,
example: .com, .edu, .net, .com.mt, .fr
2
Domain Name Service - DNS
An Internet service that translates domain
names into IP addresses. Because domain
names are alphabetic, they're easier to
remember. The Internet however, is really
based on IP addresses. Every time you use a
domain name, therefore, a DNS service must
translate the name into the corresponding IP
address. For example, the domain
name www.example.com might translate to
198.105.232.4.

Domain Name Registrar
A domain name registrar is an organization or
commercial entity, accredited by a generic
top-level domain registry (gTLD) and/or by
a country code top-level domain (ccTLD)
registry, to manage the reservation
of Internet domain names in accordance with
the guidelines of the designated domain name
registries and offer such services to the public.

Web Hosting Service
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting
service that allows individuals and organizations
to make their own website accessible via
the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies
that provide space on a server they own or lease
for use by their clients as well as
providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data
center. Web hosts can also provide data center
space and connectivity to the Internet for servers
they do not own to be located in their data
center, called colocation or Housing as it is
commonly called in Latin America or France.

can rent a small space on their server)
• Point the domain to that IP Address
• Set up the domain on the server
• Wait for the domain to propagate
• Set up an FTP and Upload Files

File Transfer Protocol - FTP
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a
standard network protocol used to transfer
files from one host to another over a network,
such as the Internet. FTP is built on a clientserver architecture and utilizes separate
control and data connections between the
client and server.

Content Management System – CMS (1)
A content management system (CMS) is a system
used to manage the content of a Web site.
Typically, a CMS consists of two elements: the
content management application (CMA) and the
content delivery application (CDA). The CMA
element allows the content manager or author,
who may not know Hypertext Markup Language
(HTML), to manage the creation, modification,
and removal of content from a Web site without
needing the expertise of a Webmaster.
9
Content Management System – CMS (2)
The CDA element uses and compiles that
information to update the Web site. The
features of a CMS system vary, but most
include Web-based publishing, format
management, revision control, and indexing,
search, and retrieval.

WordPress
A very popular open source blog publishing
program that is installed on the user's Web
server. Introduced in 2003, WordPress is written
in PHP and uses a MySQL database. Noted for its
rich features, WordPress "Themes" provide
numerous templates from which to choose a look
and feel. In addition, the site can be enhanced
with dialogs such as user registration, user
feedback and password protection. WordPress
also enables non-blog content to be included,
and it imports other blog publishing formats. For
