LAN -Local Area Network
WAN – Wide Area Network
WiFi = Wireless Fidelity
ETHERNET – Most common system today of
hardware and software and protocols for
making networks
INTERNET – A global INTERconnection of
NETworks
Protocols
• The RULE and Conventions to allow for
communication between computers
• Implemented in SOFTWARE
• Required by HARDWARE (routers and servers)
• Lots of them at different levels
Networks
• Private – like in a business or an office or at
home
• Public – like the Internet or MSN
Some Application Protocols
• SMTP – simple mail transport portocol
(used for email)
• POP – Post Office Protocol
(delivers mail like an ordinary letter ie to your
“mailbox”)
Transport Protocols
• Rules for delivering the coded messages that
are in computer network communications
• TCP – Transmission Control Protocol
• IP v4 and IP v6 – the rules for uniquely
identifying individual users on the internet.
