• From another operating system on the

Using CD Notes
• Set CD-ROM to be a bootable device
• Select this option by pressing the key
when the systems
– Otherwise the computer will start from an
already active partition containing an
operating system
Unattended Installation
• A script file can be created to continue
with unattended installation
– It will have the answer to all the questions
such as for example, the language of
operation etc.

Windows Systems Verification
• All operating systems on the machine
will be verified
• Only the NT family of operating
systems can be upgraded
• In the case of the others, only an
upgrade is allowed
Setup Steps
• Inspects the hardware configuration
• Loads drivers
• Copies temporary files from CD to the
local hard disk
• Creates or appends the boot.ini file and
continue with the installation
• Reboots and continues with the
installation using the local files
Setup Options
Partitioning
• A partition can be created for installing
the server operating system
• Although not recommended, the OS
can be installed in an already existing
partition containing another OS
Partition Points
• Always install all the programs in one
partition
• Create additional partitions for data
• Concepts
– Primary partition
– Extended partition
– Logical drives
File System
• Use the NTFS file system to format the
partition
– NTFS 5.0
– It is secure
• Use, if necessary the FAT32 file system in
another partition to store information to be
shared by other OSs on the server or to allow
direct access to the data in the partition
without security
– This is not recommended

– Not recommended for servers
• Static IP
– Specify the IP parameters such as IP
address, subnet mask etc.
