VMWare Workstation Installation
MICROSOFT WINDOWS
SERVER 2008 ENTERPRISE ED.
Starting Vmware Workstation
Go to the start menu and
start the VMware
Workstation program.
*Note: The following instructions are
written starting at the point after the
download and/or installation of
VMware Workstation (or MS Virtual
PC). If you have any questions
regarding the download or installation
see your instructor.
Creating a new virtual machine.
Select “New Virtual
Machine” on the Home
page.
Selecting the Configuration
Method
For this installation, we
will stay with the default
of “Typical” configuration.
The “Custom”
configuration should be
done by more advanced
users or with the guidance
of your instructor.
Click Next.
Choosing Install Method
In the “Guest Operating
System Installation” window,
select the “I will install the
operating system later” radial
button.
Select the Guest OS
VMware will likely detect the
OS automatically. If not,
choose from the list the most
appropriate operation system.
Naming the Virtual Machine
In this step you need to give
your virtual machine a
descriptive name and select a
location for it.
It’s good practice to include the
OS version in the name and
create a folder with the same
name just for that particular
virtual machine.
Click Next.
How big should the VM be?
Although the size of your VM
can be proportional to the
size of the hard drive that it
is on, we will make ours 16
GB.
Click Next.
Creating the VM
Check the settings to make
sure they are correct and
then click Finish.
Selecting the boot image
Find the iso image for
the installation (right
click on the CDROM
icon, select settings)
and
Click OK
Reset the VM
Click on the “Reset This
Virtual Machine”
button.
*The machine will
automatically boot to
the ISO image.
Language, Time, Keyboard
Keep the defaults.
Click Next.
Start the Install
Click “Install now”
Select the OS Version
For this installation we
are going with Windows
Server 2008 Enterprise
without Hyper-V (Full
Installation)
License Terms
Check “I accept the
license terms”.
Click Next
Type of Installation
We are going to do a
Custom (advanced)
install for this VM.
Where to Install
Select Disk 0 (the disk
you created for the VM)
Click Next
Installing Windows…
It will take several minutes
to complete the
installation.
Login
Enter a password for
the Administrator
account and login as
Administrator.
VMware Tools
VMware Tools
installation should start
automatically after you
login.
Activating Windows
Right click on Computer,
on the Start Menu, or
press the Windows Key +
Pause/Break for the
System window.
Click on the “Activate
Windows now” link at the
bottom of the window.
*Note: Make sure you
have a connection to the
internet before
proceeding with this
step.
Software Key
Enter the key that came
with your software.
Click Next
Activating Windows
It will take a few
minutes for the process
to complete.
Updates
After logging in and
setting up a network
connection the first
thing to do would be
check for updates.
Updates
Install the Windows
Update Software.
Updates
If you don’t select all
updates, it’s a good idea to
at least select “Important”
updates.
Installation Complete
Your new Microsoft
Windows Server 2008 VM
should be ready to go now.
