Technical Significance
Approach
Develop and analyze a new architecture and protocols
for wireless internetworking that reduce communication
and processing overhead.
Develop and analyze new methods to improve the
performance of TCP over dynamic wireless networks.
Develop and analyze new approaches to supporting endto-end multipoint communication over multihop wireless
networks.
Explore the interaction between channel access
mechanisms and packet forwarding in the ability of a
wireless network to support point-to-point and multipoint
reliable communication.
Impact
Current TCP implementations perform poorly over
multihop wireless networks.
There is little understanding on the ability of multihop
wireless networks to support end-to-end multipoint
communication.
Signaling among wireless routers is a form of
multipoint communication.
Prior approaches to extending the IP Internet to the
wireless domain either treat the wireless segment as a
subnet or use IP as the packet forwarding layer inside
the wireless network. Both approaches have their
limitations.
More efficient signaling methods for networks
with very dynamic topologies.
Novel solutions for multipoint communication
over highly dynamic environments (e.g., Naval
surface fire support, command posts ashore).
More efficient TCP implementations that cope
with the characteristics of wireless multihop
networks.
