ITGS – The Internet and WWW
History
In the 1960s:
• Computers couldn’t communicate with
each other
• Data moved from one computer to
another by carrying or mailing magnetic
tape or punched cards.

ITGS – The Internet and WWW
History
Why computer scientists made the first
network?
• The main idea was to enable
researchers to share computing
resources and ideas.
2
ITGS – The Internet and WWW
History
What vision of the first network was U.S.
military strategists?
• They wanted a network that could
function even if some connections were
destroyed.
• U.S. provided 1 million $ for scientists
and engineers to build a small
experimental network

ITGS – The Internet and WWW
History - ARPANET
The first network was ARPANET in
1969.
The first historic message form UCLA to
Doug Engelbart’s lab at the Stanford
Research Institute.

ITGS – The Internet and WWW
History - ARPANET
ARPANET:
• A network was unreliable
• All computers were equal in their ability
to communicate with other network
computers.

ITGS – The Internet and WWW
History – ARPANET - Packet
ARPANET - Packet:
• Messages were contained in software
packets that could travel independently
by any number of different paths.
• Packets could pass through all kind of
computers.

ITGS – The Internet and WWW
History – ARPANET - Protocol
ARPANET - Protocol :
• At the beginning it was peer-to-peer
network.
• 1980s was developed the protocols as
a standard computer language.

ITGS – The Internet and WWW
Internet
The Internet is:
• a technology, a tool, and a culture.
• adding new features.
• at the beginning computer scientists,
now all professions.

Inside the Internet
The Internet
• Number of networks,
• is not controlled by any one
government, corporation, individual, or
legal system.
• Several international organizations
develop standards and protocols, but no
one has the power to control the Net’s
operation or evolution

Counting Connections
It’s impossible to pin down the exact
size of the Internet
• growing too fast,
• is decentralized,
• doesn’t have hard boundaries.

Inside the Internet
The Internet
• DNS domain name system.
• General categories of top-level
domains

Internet Protocols
The Internet
• TCP/IP Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol;
It was developed as an experiment in
internetworking, connecting different
types of networks and computer
systems.
• TCP/IP became “language” of the
Internet.
