INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER An ISP (Internet service provider) is a company which provides internet access for businesses or homes, often for a monthly fee. There are a number of ways of receiving the internet from an ISP including modem dial-up and cable broadband service. WEB HOSTING SERVICES A web hosting service is a company that allows organisations or individuals to make their websites accessible on the internet (World Wide Web) 24 hours a day. DOMAIN NAME REGISTRARS A domain name registrar is a company that deals out domain names to business's for their websites. The business often pays for the domain name for a monthly or yearly basses. It is common that a company would buy every combination of there domain name to make sure no other websites could use a very similar address. E.g. A business may buy www.company.com as well as www.company.co.uk. This would mean that if somebody entered either address, they would be sent to the same page. A DNS (domain name structure) is a system used to identify a website similar to the way that our house address identifies your house A DNS typically has a hierarchical structure, with the most important part of it being said first. THE WORLD WIDE WEB The World Wide Web (aka the web) is a system that allows websites to be 'online'. This means that pages including text, images, audio, videos and other multimedia can be viewed anywhere in the world on 'the web'. It was invented by Tim BernersLee 1990. He gave it away for free and got no money from it. The World Wide Web is a system of linked hypertext documents. WEB SERVERS A web server is a computer that gives web content to users. All web servers have an IP address. This is done using HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) meaning that documents, which mostly made from HTML (Hypertext mark-up language), can be viewed; These documents can also contain images videos etc. for example when the URL www.google.com is searched in, a request is sent to www,google.com, and the server then fetches the page and your browser opens the page MAIL SERVERS Mail servers are email servers that works like a virtual post office. It stores all incoming mail. in email the server responsible for sending emails is called the SMPT or simple mail transfer protocol. Messages are sent from one SMPT server to another SMTP server by connecting using a IP address. PROXY SERVERS A proxy server is a server that is in between a client application and a real server. Proxy’s are used to intercept incoming and outgoing requests to see if it can fulfil a request itself such as showing a webpage, file etc. ROUTERS A router is a device that forwards data packets along networks. Home networks typically use a wireless or wired internet protocol or IP, this joins the home’s Local area network ( LAN) to the wide area network ( WAN ) of the internet. WEB BROWSERS A web browser is a program that reads coding on web pages and displays them. Examples of a web browsers include: Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. EMAIL Email aka electronic mail is a method of sending and receiving electronic messages. Often on a computer or smart phone.
