Who was Christopher Columbus

• Born in Genoa, Italy.
• Was a sailor, cartographer and map maker.
• Learn how to be a sailor in Portugal.
• Came up with the idea of crossing the Atlantic Ocean to get to Asia.
His Plan
• He wanted to embark on a voyage of exploration to find a new sea route to
India and other places in Asia.
• He ask the Portuguese monarch first, but he did not supported the Plan.
• In 1486 Columbus ask Spain’s Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabel
the Castile for help to do his plan. They did not accept.
• In 1492, after Spain's expulsed the Moors (Muslims) and the Jews Columbus ask the
Spain’s Monarchs again for support.
• Catholic Monarchs decided to help and sign a contract called the Capitulations of
Santa Fe. In it detailed the rights and obligations of Christopher Columbus and the
Spanish monarchs.

The first trip 1492
• The monarchs made arrangement so that Columbus sail from the Port of
Palos.
• In Los Palos Columbus met the brothers Pinzon and Juan de la Cosa, who
were sailor that joined him for the expedition.
• The three-ship fleet was formed, the Pinta, the Niña and the Santa Maria.
• On August 3, 1492, the fleet left Palos.
• After 36 days of uncertainty in the Atlantic Ocean they arrived in the
archipelago of the Bahamas. Arriving in what Columbus called San
Salvador.
• Columbus called the Native Indians, believing he had arrived in India.
Fort La Navidad
• The Santa Maria got stuck at the Hispaniola during the first trip to the
Americas.
• Columbus used the timber from the ship to build a small fort, called
Navidad.
• 39 sailors stayed in the Hispaniola and the rest of the crew sailed back
to Spain.
Columbus arrives back in Spain
• The Spanish King and Queen welcomed Columbus, and immediately
started a Second Voyage.
• They ask him to start a colonization process
• Spaniards were expected to take from the Natives their beliefs,
tradition and religion.

• On September 1493, Columbus sailed from the port of Cadiz with 17
ships and around 1,300 men.

The Spaniards arrived in Puerto Rico
• During the Second voyage on November 19,1493 the Spaniards arrive
in Boriquen.
• Columbus named our island San Juan Bautista
• They did not remain in the island for long on November 20, they
sailed of to Hispaniola.
