Summary
Overview (What is VoIP?)
Voice over Internet Protocol
Involves the delivery of voice information
over
IP based networks. i.e. Internet
Used to transmit voice, fax, data and
multimedia all in one network
How does VoIP Work?
Sends voice information in discrete digital packets
rather than sending it through the public switched
telephone network (PSTN).
Takes an analogue voice signal and converts it into
a digital format so that it can be delivered over an
IP network. i.e. Internet.
By using a router-based gateway, a PC-based
gateway, a PBX-based gateway and others it can
perform the conversion from an analogue signal to
a digital format.
Detailed Explanation
PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)
– POTS based on Circuit Switching
– Today it is out of date
– ISP’s pay for long distance access
VoIP takes advantage of this
Detailed Explanation
IP telephony
– Packet switching using H.323 Standard
