 Attachments from unknown
persons should not be opened.
 .DOC, .XLS, .SCR, .EXE, .PIF,
.VBS, .COM, .REG are unsafe &
can contain viruses.
 Sending .TXT and .RTF files
should be encouraged.
 Antivirus software with latest
updates should be present.
Preventing Virus Spread
 Email Viruses use address book to
send its copies to all users. This can be
dangerous because emails goes from
your name.
 To avoid this – In address book create
an entry with name !000 and blank
email address.
 Email software will block the email if
virus sends a mail to this address.
Preventing Virus Spread
What to do if a virus infects
 Isolate your machine from network.




Unplug the network cable of your
machine immediately.
Perform a clean boot (boot from a clean
floppy diskette)
Run the Virus Scanner
Keep regular backup of data onto
CDROM.
Never share folders with WRITE access
General Internet Usage Tips
 Sharing software: Its better to copy Virus
definitions, Yahoo Messenger etc from a
colleague who has the latest version
rather than everyone downloading from
the Internet.
 Sharing photographs: Instead of sending
photographs to everyone through emails
its better to upload them on yahoo photos
& send the link to all persons.
