Early European Explorers
As Europeans searched for Sea Routes to Asia,
Christopher Columbus Reached the Americas.

became easier

Asia, the rest of Europe searches for more
routes
Columbus Day
 Christopher Columbus sets out to find a
westward water route to Asia
 Columbus miscalculated how far Asia reached
around the world and the size of the world and
thought he had a short trip
 When the king of Portugal would not fund
Columbus’ voyage Spain financed the trip
Second Thoughts
 King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella funded
Columbus for profit and to Spread Christianity
 Spain Had doubts about the Journey including:
 Accuracy of Columbus’ route calculations
 Spain was at war with Muslims
 Columbus had a high price for his services

 Columbus wanted big rewards for his exploration including
money and leadership
 After Defeating the Muslims, Spain financed Columbus and
he set sail using the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria
 Columbus set sail with an experienced crew and one year
of supplies
Wrong Turn
 Columbus set sail on August 3rd 1492 and kept
journals of his journey
 As the crew lost confidence in the voyage land was
sighted on October 22nd, 1492
 Thinking he reached the Indies in Southeast Asia,
Columbus called the Taino people Indians
 Columbus, however, Had discovered the Caribbean
Islands
Round Trip
 Columbus Declared the discovered land San Salvador and set out to
find Japan, reaching several Caribbean Islands
 When Columbus found gold and pearls in Hispaniola, he left his
men to rule the land and set sail home
 As the Crew angered the Taino people, they would be killed
 Columbus gave his report of his route to Asia, not understanding
he had discovered a new Continent
Free for all
 Columbus failed to bring back riches from the
new land and did NOT spread Christianity
 After his death, Europeans realized he had
discovered a new continent and wanted to get
rich
 As Spain grew rich in the new land England
and France would begin to explore the land
