Reasons:
• Necessity
• Commercial- Supply/Demand
• Religious- convert to Christianity
“God, glory, and gold.”
Advantages:
• Political- power hungry
– Sponsorship ($ investments)
– Provided with weapons
• Technological- improved navigation
– Such as the lateen, astrolabe, caravels
Who is Prince Henry the Navigator?
• Prince in Portugal who built a
navigation school to help train
explorers on the newest
navigational techniques/tools.
Henry the Navigator…
• He brought shipbuilders, mapmakers, sea
captains, and instrument makers from all
over Europe to live and study with him.
• invited sailors, travelers, and scholars from
Europe, Africa, and the Middle East to
share their knowledge of geography.
• Funded trips to West Africa.
• Ultimately, he helped scholars create more
accurate maps of Africa.
