AGE OF EXPLORATION
• WHAT WAS IT? A time (1400s-early
1800s) when the main European
countries (Portugal, Spain, France,
and England) were looking for a new
route/ path to get to Asia.
• WHAT WERE THEY LOOKING TO
FIND?

Why did Europeans go exploring?
1.GOLD
New trade routes opened up opportunities for
wealth. This also included spices to buy/sell
2.GOD
Missionaries wanted to spread Christianity.
3.GLORY
Explorers were considered famous heroes;
countries competed for colonies. Bragging
rights for a country: I have done more than
you!

Vasco da Gama.
He paid for Vasco Da Gama to explore the
West Coast of Africa. He was trying to
find a quicker route to Asia. Da Gama
did reach Asia (India)

They sailed near Africa and South America
Asia!!!! Wasn’t that where everyone was
going?? To find a quicker route to Asia.

Sailed from Spain, around the tip of South America and
is killed near the Philippines in 1521. His crew will
return back to Spain around 1522.
First explorer credited with a crew sailing
around the world- called circumnavigate (even though
he died during the trip)

Vikings.
1496 and 1497
First expedition he got lost and returned
home. On his second voyage, he landed in
Newfoundland, which is in present
day Canada.
His explorations helped to establish a strong
British presence in North America.
