Workshop on IP Applications and Digital Divide, Tunis, 17-19 June 2003
What are ITU-T Projects?
o Standardization domain of importance
o May be shared by several SGs
o May correspond to (very) urgent market
needs
o Needs for coordination
o Endorsed by TSAG
o Examples
• IP, IPCablecom, Mediacom 2004, NGN
2004, Security,…

IP Project (SG 13)
The explosive growth of the Internet, and other IP-based
networks, and with it the ever increasing demand for higher
bandwidth/capacity, has network operators and manufacturers
alike reconsidering their services, network structures,
products etc. Information technology and the use of IP-based
networks and applications (e.g. e-commerce) have become
critical factors in the development of telecommunication
networks
o Although the ITU-T and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
are collaborating in some areas, given the new industry emphasis
on Internet and IP structured signals, this collaboration must be
strengthened within the context of changes in work emphasis and
direction within the ITU-T on IP-based networks. In our view
neither the IETF nor the ITU-T will be able to adequately address
this area independently. The IETF strength lies in the protocol
and application areas, whereas the ITU-T has a great deal to
offer in the areas of architectural, network interworking and
network evolution

IP Project (SG 13)
o
Since 1998, the IP project is continuously updated by the SG 13
Project Leader taking into consideration deliverables from the
ITU-T Study Groups in terms of Recommendations approved or
planned (before 1998, IP was a sub-project of the ITU-T GII
project)
o
Y.1000 to Y.9999 is reserved for IP-related Recommendations
o
The IP Project is divided in 13 areas and, for each area are
identified:
• the scope and focus of the work area
• the issues for consideration
• the status of current work within ITU-T
• the related work within IETF
