SAVANT Project:
Broadcast + Broadband
Convergence enables the simultaneous
transmission of contents via cable
broadcast, terrestrial broadcast and
broadband telecommunications networks.
SAVANT Project:
Scaleable Services
Allow TV content to be consumed flexibly using
different devices in different situations:
For example, a Set-Top-Box (Home Gateway) can
be connected to PDA and Tablet PC with WLAN.
Contents on the portable devices can be used
when they are not connected to the STB.

Additional Information Delivery
The DVB standard (MPEG2-TS) allows
content in addition to a TV picture to be
broadcast. For example, extra video clips
(MPEG-4) showing sign language, extra
audio tracks, web information (HTML), and
subtitles

INSTINCT Project:
Multiple convergence
Convergent networks
Networks exploiting the same scalable content
Convergent services
Services designed to exploit cooperation
between broadcast and telecommunications
networks.
Use scalable content
INSTINCT Project:
The aim of INSTINCT
A carrier-grade fully specified and open final
platform for the delivery of convergent services in
collaborating wireless communications and
terrestrial broadcast networks.

INSTINCT is planned in three phases
over six years.

Each project phases will last 2 years
Phase 1: Jan 2004 - Dec 2005
INSTINCT Project:
Potential users of INSTINCT
INSTINCT targets the following mobile users:
Young urban customers
Corporate users
The general public on the move: 活动中的普通大众
 Walking in a mall
 Sitting at lunch
 In cars and public transport
 Transiting through any public areas

INSTINCT Project:
A key target
INSTINCT Project:
INSTINCT will deliver
1. Service creation tools for hybrid (cooperating)
broadcast/cellular networks.
2. A system architecture including management
functions.
3. API extensions enabling inter-working between
DTV and Cellular platforms.
4. Prototype broadcast front-ends that will be
suited for mobility requirements (low-power, low
volume, low cost).
5. Training material and curriculum to teach
operational actors

Brazilian involvement in INSTINCT:
A model for Chinese involvement in FP6
The first two-year phase of INSTINCT started on 1
January 2004 with 9.6 million euros of funding by
the European Commission in the Framework
Programme 6. Of this funding 1.5 million euros is
going to the five Brazilian partners.
Brazilian partners work is completely integrated into
the project and in many cases contributes directly to
the work of non-Brazilians partners.
Brazilian involvement in INSTINCT:
Participation in INSTINCT enables Brazil to
-
Enter a phase of active cooperation and
transfer of knowledge in view of a growing
awareness of DVB technologies in Brazil
-
Develop general and specific partnerships for
the next generation of technologies and
standards
Brazilian involvement in INSTINCT:
Phase 2 of INSTINCT
It is anticipated that Brazilian partners will participate
fully in Phase 2 of INSTINCT. The focus of phase 2
will be on content and service creation (and
related tools), although equipment aspects and
network aspects will still be addressed. The
introduction of new partners will be considered for
phase 2 in order to match the proposed objectives.
