SPARTA
• Totalitarian Government
• Uses force to govern the people
• 3 groups of people:
• Helots (slaves)
• Spartan women (educated, active in community life)
• Spartan men (ALL trained to be warriors)
SPARTA
• Spartan life
• Children judged at birth (weakness = death)
• Age 7 = formal education at the agoge. Boys
went shoeless, wore minimal clothing, and
learned how to be a proper Spartan soldier.
• Girls were trained to be physically fit as well
• Men married at the age of 20 but still had to live in
the barracks
• Helots worked all their lives as Spartan slaves.
• Did not value education in arts or philosophy.
ATHENS
• Democracy
• Government by the people
• All citizens (adult males only) were equal before the
law
• Every citizen had the ability to participate in and
vote for the government

• Males educated in war and academics, and encouraged
to develop art and architecture
• Women not allowed to be educated or participate in
politics

• Great achievements in philosophy, art, and architecture
