Source Types
There are two kinds of sources…
(Firsthand or "direct from the source”)
(Secondhand or "analysis of a primary source”)
Some sources are more useful than others, sources can be bias or ‘one-sided’ - BUT all
sources can be used!
There are four main types of evidence
Oral
Visual
Speeches, passed on traditions &
customs, ‘word of mouth’, interviews,
testimony, spoken word, recordings…
Photos, paintings, drawings, maps, video,
posters, charts/graphs…
Written
Physical
Legal documents, letters, diary, written
accounts, newspapers, magazines,
charts/graphs…
Buildings, vehicles, forensic,
objects/artefacts: coins, jewellery, drawings,
material, writings, pottery, machinery,
technology, paintings…

• Some gladiator fights were part of a big event called ‘the Games’
• These games would take place in the Colosseum in Rome.
• 50,000 people could watch the games.
• During the games they had three different fights. In the morning there would be animal
shows where animals would fight each other.
• In the afternoon gladiators would fight against animals and then finally it would be time
for gladiator fights.
