Empire
Cause- enemies from the north began
crossing Rome’s borders and plundering
their territory.
Roman legions were unable to fight
invasions from several fronts at once.
Government during the Republic
During the Republic power was spread
out, and one person could not have
absolute control.
3 governing bodies the Senate, the
assembly of centuries, and the assembly
of tribes
The Roman Senate
500 patrician served for life
Had extensive powers
Collected taxes
Could appoint a dictator during a time of
crisis
Dictator- had absolute power for 6 months
then they had to step down
The Assembly of Centuries
Represented the army
Each member had one vote
The Assembly of Tribes
Made up of plebeians
Represented the 35 tribes of Rome
The Government during the Roman
Empire
The emperor had absolute power
The empire was divided up into provinces
Each province had a governor
Governors were chosen by the emperor
from the Senate
Governors were responsible for running
the finances of the province and keeping
the people from rebelling

justice
