The Roman Empire
In the beginning…
The Story of Romulus and Remus
► Romulus
and Remus were twins
that were placed in a basket and sent down
the Tiber River.
► They landed on the shore of the river and
were raised by a wolf until a shepherd
found them.
The Story of Romulus and Remus
► When
the boys grew up, they decided to
build a city, but they argued over where to
build it.
► During the argument Romulus got so mad,
he killed his brother Remus.
► Romulus then built his city where the
basket had landed on the shore of the
river. He called it Rome.
Who Ruled Rome?

► There
were seven kings that ruled Rome
before the Republic

first king is said to have been Romulus
early Kings were under the influence
of the Etruscans that taught them their
alphabet and new building techniques
including the arch.
The Republic
► What
is a republic ?
 A republic is were the citizens chose leaders to
run the government.
► Citizens
were divided into two groups
 Patricians
 Plebeians
Patricians and Plebeians
► Patricians
 Members of a small number of wealthy Roman
family
► Plebeians
 Everyone else
 Artisans, shopkeeper and peasants
 Not all plebeians were poor!
The Republic
► During
the Republic, Rome began a quest
for more territory.
► This led to several wars including the Punic
Wars.
► The constant warfare led to problems in
Rome that led to the downfall of the
Republic and the rise of the Empire.
The Empire
► Julius
Caesar declares himself dictator for
life, officially ending the Republic.
► After Caesar was murdered, several leaders
fought for control of Rome.
► Caesar’s adopted son Octavian defeated his
rivals and won the right to be Emperor of
Rome.
► He then changed his name to Augustus.
The Pax Romana
► The
Pax Romana was a period of about 200
years in which Rome was not at war.
During this time there were great
advancements in Roman civilization. The
Pax Romana ended after the rule of Marcus
Aurelius.
