The Rule of Augustus
The Roman Empire
In 27 B.C. Octavian told the Senate that
he had restored the republic and would
resign as sole ruler.
The Senate turned him down and gave
him several titles.
Rule of Augustus
Octavian took the title of Augustus or
“revered one”
He was the 1st Emperor of Rome
Augustus’s policies lasted and brought
about 200 years of peace.
The Rule of Augustus
Augustus held the offices of:
Consul
Tribune
High Priest
Senator
All at the same time
Rule of Augustus
Augustus refused to be crowned
emperor.
Why?Most Romans would not accept 1 person
rule unless it “looked” like a republic.
What did Augustus keep in place?
Assemblies, government officials of the
republic
Rule of Augustus
Augustus was able to strengthen his authority
by:
Having soldiers swear allegiance or loyalty to
him
Chose people for positions based on their
talents rather then by birth
Roman Empire boundaries were easy to
defend
Made Rome beautiful
Governors had long terms in office
Rule of Augustus
Freedmen were former enslaved peoplewho could now have chance to
participate in government
A census was a population count that
helped determine how much taxes
needed to be paid.
Pax Romana
Augustus ruled Rome for 41 years. He
was able to bring Peace to Rome.
His 3 accomplishments that benefited
Rome:
Romans had a sense of Patriotism
Made Roman citizenship available to
people in provinces
Reorganized the government
