Known widly as Colonia Ulpia Traiana
Augusta Sarmizegetusa ,it was the
capital of the roman Dacia beeing
situated at aproximately 40 km of
Sarmizegetusa Regia.In contrast with
the old capital, the new one is no
longer built deep in the Mountains of
Orastie but in a plain area in Hateg at
cote 531. The choice of the place in
which the city was built was made on
the basis of a very good defesive
position having on its sides the
Retezat and Poiana Rusca Mountains
and as fortification points the camps
of Bumbesti,Tibiscum and Voislova
Miicia.
In the year 102 ,because the
romans did not want a new
batle at Tapae(today the
locality of Portile de Fier ale
Transilvaniei)in the place that
will become Ulpia Traiana
Sarmizegetusa a roman
garrison was constructed that
would consolidate the roman
positions in Dacia.The city as
we know it was raised by the
roman govenor of that province
Decimus Tarentius Scaurianus
having the clasical shape of a
quadrilateral with rounded
edges of a roman stronghold.
The wall was built out of
carved stone blocks,conjoined
with mortar having towers and
gates on the upper sides.The
gates that where builted
between paralel sides were
linked by two streets that
crossed the city.The market
was situated in the center of
the citadel ,that was protected
by walls and so were the
tempel,and other important
administrative
buldings.Outside the walls we
could fiind some other public
constructions like less
important tempels and a
cemetery
Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa was a
very developed city so it was the
religious center of the region. In the
Northern part of the city, outside the
city’s walls there were some temples
were the inhabitants of
Sarmizegetusa used to venerate
usual roman Gods as : Nemesis, Liber
Pater, Aesculapius and Hygia, Silvanus
and others. Outside the city’s walls
the inhabitants developed economical
activities and today we can see the
ruins of the glass workshop. The
Amphitheatre was surrounded by
other constructions were the fighter
were training and living. In the
Amphitheatre more than 5000 people
could see the exceptional
performance of gladiators.
In the center of the city there was the Forum . The
Forum built by Traian, civic and administrative center,
was situated in the center of the city where the two
main roads of Sarmizegetusa coming from the north
to south and from east to west were crossing The
entry had the aspect of
Triumph Arch were was carved the inscription of the
foundation of the colony. The altar was guarded by 4
great columns. On both sides
of the entry there were 2 fountains decorated with
statues. The proper forum was a open place
surrounded by columns and paved with pieces of
marble. In the same place were also few monuments
that can still be seen today. There were also a basilica
and a great room for different type of meetings. In
the east was the Court, the place were the judges
were standing and under a prison. In the center of the
east side was found curia, the place of the meetings.
Under, were two rooms
where was kept the treasure of the city. Right next to
it there is a passage to the second forum of
Sarmizegetusa ( initially local market)
that was built later and became religious center of the
town.
In the end because it lacked
several defencive items and
building the Emperor Aurelian
decided to retreet all the troops
and public clerks from the city
when the barbarian armies
ataked.The great mass of the
populatin however remained in
the city and it continued its
existence for some time in worse
conditions using only the
amphitheatre as fortification in
case of an attack. The life in the
city probably stoped after the
huns ran the over beeing
embedded with the rest of the
nomadic populations especialy
after the death of Attila,a time in
which chaos spreaded around the
land.
