Galatians 5:16-21
A Merging of Cultures- Galatia
• A province of the Roman Empire
• Pre-Roman, Galatia was settled by the Gauls, a
Celtic people
• Under Roman occupation two cultures merge
together:
• Gallic Culture – Animism, Druid priestly order,
Tribal system
• Roman Culture – polytheistic, permissive
household codes
A Modern Merging
• There is no new sin in our culture, it is merely
presented through contemporary media
• Our society has undergone a massive multinational merger over the last 100 years
• When we, as the Galatians did, become
Christians we face the new challenge of
creating a new culture, leaving behind some
of our old influences and practices
Grey Areas
• Beyond the scope of the biblical black and
white boundaries regarding our moral conduct
we are faced with many facets of
contemporary life that aren’t clear cut in
scripture for every individual
Living Principles
• When our desire to live the right moral life
isn’t laid out in black and white on the pages
of scripture we need to ask the right questions
before our actions
• Will what we do work toward building God’s
kingdom?
• Does our action sit well with our spirit?
• Does it honour God?
