The Beginning of
Rome
Can I explain the effect geography had on the rise of Roman civilization?
S
Beginning of Rome
S Greek culture did not die when
Greece’s power declined.
S Parts of it were adapted and used
by the Roman.
S The Romans had mostly been
isolated from the civilizations of
the eastern Mediterranean region,
but over time they learned from
these civilizations and used their
knowledge to build a vast and
powerful empire.
Settling of Italy
S Italy’s central location in the
Mediterranean region has attracted
people for thousands of years.
S People can easily travel to it from Africa,
Asia, and Europe.
S People and goods moved with little
difficulty through passes in Italy’s rugged
mountains.
S These mountain passes also linked
settlements together.
Italy’s Attraction to Settlers
S Settlers were and are attracted to Italy
because of its sunny, mild climate and
fertile farmland.
S Italy’s mountain slopes level off to large
flat plains that are ideal for growing crops.
S With the ability to grow plenty of food,
Italy could support a large population.
Rome’s Location
S Home to the Romans
was made on the
Italian Peninsula
which is a long, thin
peninsula that juts out
from central Europe
into the Mediterranean
Sea.
Italy
S Italy looks like a high-
heeled boot. The boot’s
heel points to Greece, and
the toe points to the island
of Sicily.
S The Alps are like shoelaces
that are strung across the
top of the boot. These
rugged Alps separate Italy
from northern Europe.
S There are other mountains
and volcano's that dot
Italy's landscape.
Physical Features that Influenced
Rome’s Development
S Rome was founded about 15 miles up the
Tiber River from the Mediterranean Sea.
S People used the river to move goods easily
between northern and southern Italy.
S Merchants could also ship their goods out
to the Mediterranean Sea using the Tiber
River.
S Rome was far enough up the Tiber River
to escape raids by sea-going pirates.
S Rome’s location across seven steep hills
made it easy to defend against enemy
attacks.
