Course Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, the trainees should be able to:
• Identify health informatics discipline
• Recognize Institute of Medicine's recommendations for patient safety
• State the definition and purposes of medical record
• Explains the limitations of paper record
• State the definition of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) and its
importance over paper record
• Define Health information exchange
• Define problems in current healthcare system that motivate informatics
• Identify IOM key capabilities of an EHR
• State the preliminary step in implementing EHR in developing countries
• Recognize challenges with HIT implementation in developing countries
• Identify privacy, security and confidentiality of patient data
• Identify benefits of EHR adoption
• Use open source EHR
Topics to be Discussed
• Introduction about Open Source
• open source EHR
• open source EHR applications
• Demonstration of EHR applications Examples
Open Source
Approach
Open Source EHR
why do we need automation??
Result Management: lab results, radiology reports can be accessed easily via EHR
system once they are appeared leading to save time and increase patient safety
Health Information And Data: collect data about patient demographic, problems
list, allergies, medications, immunization,
Order Management,: computerized provider order entry (CPOE) eliminates errors
of handwriting, and monitors duplication of orders leading to increase patient
safety and reduce costs. CPOE can be used to order medications, lab tests,
radiological examination and consultations
why do we need automation?? (cont)
Decision Support: provides drug- drug interaction alerts , drug allergy alerts, aid in
diagnosis leading to enhance quality of care and patient safety
Electronic Communication And Connectivity: EHR facilitate communication
between care providers and with patient leading to continuity of care
Patient Support: EHR systems provide education materials and resources for
patients and allow home monitoring for critical patients e.g. cardiac patient
Administrative Processes And Reporting: EHR systems provide patient scheduling,
appointment, billing and statistics for decision making
Reporting And Population Health: infectious diseases, immunization
EHR components
Types of EHR software
Vendor lock in
Open source
Why Open source EHR system?
Reliability
• Severe defects tend to be fixed within hours of their
being detected, a process which is undoubtedly assisted
by the availability of the source code. Able developers
who discover a bug will commonly also fix it and then
report it to the maintainers as well as issuing an
updated version of the software on their own authority.
Users of the software can choose whether to use the
unofficial fix or wait for an `official' version.
Why Open source EHR system?
Stability
• The way that Open Source products tend to
conform closely to standards efforts has an
inertial effect, since standards change but
slowly and interchange formats are often
particularly stable.
Why Open source EHR system?
Auditability
• A rarely-understood benefit of Open Source
software (any software where the source code
is published) is its auditability.
Why Open source EHR system?
Cost
•(libre vs.gratis).
•freedom' and `free of
charge'
Why Open source EHR system?
Flexibility and
Freedom
•In a business context,
software flexibility is about
being able to choose
solutions suitable for the
needs of the users.
Why Open source EHR system?
Support and
Accountability
• who do I sue?
Open-source software does not differ from
proprietary software in this respect.
Some software vendors produce free
software, and obtain large parts of their
revenue from service and support
Examples of EHR applications

The medical informatics community should welcome
OSS, which holds great promise for low-cost (EHR)
systems to improve health care especially in resourcelimited settings with limited financial and human
resources.
