You are guaranteed a spot in one of the
Healthcare Science classes

You are not guaranteed a spot in CNA or
EMR class. You can’t request a specific
instructor. Students must be distributed
somewhat evenly between classrooms.

Healthcare Science Program requires all
students to have insurance
Absences/Tardies
Bring a written note, signed by your parent,
when you return. (Maxwell needs a copy as
well as your Home School.) If no note has been
received in 5 days the absence will be
unexcused and any grade(s) will result in a
zero.
 The student has 5 days to make up work.
 All make-up work will be done before or after
class, not during class time.
 3 tardies= 1 absence
 5 tardies=ISS
 1 day missed at Maxwell= 3 days missed at
your home school

In order for students to be eligible for
certification, the program and teachers
must be approved by Georgia Medical
Care Foundation (our state agency for
the Regulation of Nursing Assistants).
Students ride on Instructor’s Nursing
license, so must be able to be
professional, follow directions, not
argue, and show safe and effective skills
and judgments .

Random Drug Screen- 24 hour rule
Criminal Background Check (no “in-progress” MIP or
criminal cases)
Social Security Number (No Tax ID)
Liability Insurance (2016- $20.00) and Medical
Insurance (OR MUST PURCHASE) – Must give copy of
card
Must be 17 years or older by January 1, 2017 in
order to go to GMC and Delmar Gardens - facility
rule and cannot be bypassed. This is an AMAZING
opportunity for students. Very strict dress,
behavior, attendance, and professionalism
policies.

Attendance mandatory
No discipline referrals in current year and less than 3 last
year, under 5 unexcused absences or tardies last year
Pass all skill assessments; with 100% on Vital signs and PPE,
and normal vital sign values
GPA above 2.4 and keep grade of 75 in all HSTE classes and
in employability. Rigorous class and MUCH MORE DIFFICULT
than community CNA course
Ability to work independently and as team
Intent to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (which
includes paying the required State of GA CNA testing fee
(appr. $122) if student does not meet testing criteria,
money is NON-REFUNDABLE.
State tester comes to Maxwell at end of year for testing,
they get their actual Certifications before the end of the
year, and they get listed on the State Registry. 2016 =
100% pass rate! 2017 =
Requirements for CNA

Must purchase scrubs (appr. $35.00/per set. Need 2
sets.)

Must purchase on your own solid white, non-porous
clinical shoes, watch with second hand and black
stethoscope

Hair must be a ‘natural’ color and worn secured out of
the face and off the collar

No visible body piercing or tattoos. One small stud
type of earring in each lower lobe is acceptable.

No artificial nails-or polish (NO ACRYLIC, GEL, NAIL
WRAPS, ETC), natural, short nails only

Non-Heavy, and natural appearing make-up only

Commitment of 1 – 1.5 hours reading, studying,
practicing skills every single day

Pass Healthcare Provider BLS certification at
Maxwell to be considered (Healthcare fee of $50
was due last week)

If student does not follow requirements; or grade
OR employability falls below 75 first semester,
student will be transferred to Allied Health and a
student on the waiting list will come into the
program
Requirements for CNA

Students are taking care of real human beings
and making quick critical thinking decisions and
judgements. Due to the liability and legal
issues; we cannot take students that are on
medications that alter or impair judgment,
reasoning, personality or demeanor.

Will always be with a CNA – they are instructed
to NEVER be alone with a patient.

Students come to Maxwell and ride a bus to and
from clinical during class time.

Eddie Goolsby graduated in 2012. He is now employed as a
Paramedic/Firefighter at Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services. He
did the Gwinnett Fire Explorer program on Thursdays after school
and took my EMR class to later apply to Gwinnett Fire Academy.

EMR Certification Requirements

Students will have an opportunity to certify as an EMR
through the National Registry of Emergency Medical
Technicians (www.nremt.org)

Must have BLS healthcare provider CPR certification

Must have no record of felony convictions per NREMT
certification guidelines

Must have a SSN per NREMT guidelines

State of Georgia does not LICENSE EMR’s; If a student can
find employment, they can be employed under direction of
Medical Doctor; Grady has posted jobs for EMR’s in the past.

This is a stepping stone for many students to either to apply
to Fire Academy or apply to study in the medical fieldnursing/medical school/or other.

Difficult exam to pass – Skill Exam- must pass to qualify to
test for written exam. National Pass Rate 69% last year.

Students are learning life saving skills to use in the field when
they maybe the FIRST RESPONDERS!

Maxwell EMR Pass Rate:

Skill Exam: 100% pass rate 2015 and 2016

Written Exam: 71% 2015; 69% 2016
Criteria for testing is more difficult this year
EMR Certification Requirements




Must maintain a 75% average and demonstrate
successful competence in EMR skills in the class
before certifying
Class Attendance is mandatory and must have a
95% or better attendance during 2nd semester.
Can only miss one EXCUSED skill practice session
when scheduled for GTC or Fire Station #20.

Fees: Healthcare Fee $50 pays for CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogen
certification and textbooks, disposable supplies for classes, etc.
 BLS CPR Healthcare Provider Certification

2017- Psychomotor skills exam performed via licensed
EMT/Paramedics/RN/MD through NREMT at Gwinnett Fire
Academy due in February; Testing in May 2016; Fee maybe
applicable.
2017- $65 application fee for cognitive exam due in March; Testing in
May 2017
 2017- $35.00 testing and seat fee at Pearson Vue
 NREMT Testing Fees must be pre-paid and are non-refundable if
the student does not meet testing criteria ($95.00+).
 Students will be required to purchase EMT professional dress for offsite skill training; scrubs or uniform required in ALL HC classes daily
 Polo $35 approximately- ordered in class in September
 Optional T-shirt approximately $20.00
 EMT pants- students can purchase online or at Army Navy Store in
Snellville
 Purchase stethoscope; watch with second hand
 Athletic or EMT style boot for footwear; no open toed shoes


Interviews are in progress now.
EMR Pathway students need to submit an
application and a parent signed EMR
agreement and acknowledgement form

Dress professionally; Bring resume.
Arrive on time (10 minutes early).
If you are late—it will be noted! If you are a no-show, you
may not reschedule for another time.
Interview question form- PINK handout- must be filled out
and turned in at least 1 day before your scheduled
interview (not the day of).
Interview sign up CLOSED on Tuesday, August 16th.
Can only be scheduled to interview with one of these
program instructors. Sign up in Ms. Saulmon or Ms. Collins
class. Can’t interview for both programs.

Leadership and competition opportunities


Officers for AM session and PM session will campaign and be
elected by other HOSA members; Officers selected in
August/September by classmates

Officers conduct meetings during class time to discuss
competitions, community volunteer projects and fundraising
activities
HOSA Fall Rally

Georgia Fairgrounds in Perry, Georgia- all day field trip- Friday,
October 14, 2016 $42.00/unlimited rides and rally

Regional Competitions at Maxwell in January 2017

Georgia State Competitions in over 60 competitions including
Medical Terminology, Medical Spelling, EMT, CPR, HOSA bowl just
to name a few.


Characteristics for Success
 Students must be self-motivated and able to
work with little supervision in lab settings.
 Students should have an interest in Science and
Math and be proficient in those areas.
 Students should be responsible, dependable,
honest and able to get along well with
everyone.
 Interest in helping people and willingness to
work directly with individuals.
 Strong interpersonal and communication skills
are essential.
 Attendance is mandatory for those participating
in the Certified Nursing Assistant and the EMR
option during second semester.
