New Skills
Efficiency
>
> Demand for
individuals to work
“top of credential”
> Validation of
30 million new
consumers covered by
ACA by 2022
>
17 million more
individuals over 65 by
2025
>
As of 2012, about half
of all adults—117
million people—had
one or more chronic
health conditions.
> Expansion of
coordinated/value
based care
> Lack of “soft skills” –
professionalism,
communication,
active listening,
critical thinking,
patient education
and coaching
competencies
> Streamlined
approach for care
management
> Role evolution –
multiskilling
> Expansion and
pervasiveness of

A focus on CTE
How has certification been impactful in your state?
>
Twenty-eight states passed legislation and approved policies designed to accelerate
employer engagement with CTE to help align programs with labor market demands and
offer work-based learning opportunities for students.
>
19 states approved measures or funds to accelerate credential attainment (Kansas and
Tennessee), inform parents about the return on investment (ROI) for certain credentials
(Florida), and establish grant programs that would provide training for critical industries
like manufacturing (Illinois and Delaware).
>
This continued spike in CTE-related policies indicates a growing awareness and interest
in using CTE as a means to increase postsecondary credential attainment, provide
students with real-world experience and prepare a workforce with the knowledge and
skills necessary to maintain the nation’s competitive edge.

Patient Care Technician Defined
Source: study.com
> Patient care technicians tend to ill and injured
individuals under the supervision of doctors, nurses
and medical professionals. Their duties include
taking vital signs, collecting specimens, performing
catheterization and assisting patients with eating,
personal hygiene and grooming. They also take
notes and make assessments on their care. Patient
care technicians often work in hospitals, clinics or
rehabilitation facilities. They may use their training
and experience to pursue more advanced health
care careers.

Summary of CPCT Profession
>
The posted wages for PCTs were 35% higher than
NAs ($41,800 versus $30,950 for the median
salary).
>
This is driven up primarily by hemodialysis centers
that have specialized training and a dialysis
certification.
>
However, the type of employer hiring for these
professions is quite different.
>
Many of the PCT job postings are for medical
centers and hospitals and are centered around
renal failure.
>
Both professions have been growing significantly
since 2012
>
The average number of Job Postings for PCTs has
doubled since 2012.
>
In 2015, new job postings rose 15% year-over-year.

Challenges and Hurdles
Educational institutions are challenged
It is a challenge to track professional
on how to market and place PCT’s
data because there is not a CIP/SOC
code for Patient Care Technicians
The role of the Medical Assistant,
Patient Care Tech and Nursing
Assistant are often used
interchangeably based on the state,
institution, and role.
15
Expanding CNA to Patient Care Tech
(CPCT)
CPCT expands on the
CNA skill set to
include phlebotomy
and EKG.
