DEFINES/DESCRIBES OPIATES
• referred to as narcotics
• a group of drugs which are used medically to relieve pain
• have a high potential for abuse
• opium, morphine, heroin, and codeine
• Opiate describes any of the narcotic opioid alkaloids found in opium. These
alkaloids come from the sap of the opium poppy.
IDENTIFIES TYPES OF OPIATES
• Natural opiates- alkaloids contained in the resin of the opium poppy
• Semi-synthetic opioids- created from the natural opiates
• Fully synthetic opioids
• Endogenous opioid peptides, produced naturally in the body, such as
endorphins, enkephalins, dynorphins, and endomorphins.

THERAPEUTIC USES OF
PRESCRIPTION OPIATES
• used to control pain but are also used to control coughs and diarrhea
• Used as anesthesia
• Morphine and Heroin are routinely prescribed as a painkiller

EFFECTS.
• Hyperalgesia- heightened pain sense
• Digestion issues
• Dehydration problems in the body and on the skin
• Gingivitis and cavities
• Etc…

• Low energy, Irritability, Anxiety, Agitation, Insomnia
• Runny nose, watery eyes
• Hot and cold sweats, Goose bumps
• Yawning
• Muscle aches and pains
• Abdominal cramping
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea

OPIATES.
• injectable drug use has been linked with the HIV virus that leads to AIDS
• Heart damage
• Arthritis
• Cant think clearly
• Cant make good decisions
• Scarred veins

OPIATE ABUSE AND DEPENDENCE.
• Medications used to treat symptoms:
• Suboxone, Subutex (buprenorphine)
• Revia (naltrexone)
• Methadone
