Greek Architects and Artists
• The work of Greek architects and artists
reflected a concern with balance, order, and
beauty. Harmony and Idealism are found in the
paintings, sculptures, and buildings. All the
artwork offers views of Greek life. There are
thousands of artifacts left today for us to study
and enjoy.

Columns
Columns are part of post and lintel type construction.
Egyptians used post and lintel
columns in their construction.
Columns
• The Greeks adopted post and lintel from
the Egyptians modifying and developing
their own style of column or order
decoration.
• There were three types of Greek Columns
still used today: Doric, Ionic, Corinthean.
Doric Columns
The first of the Greek order (the oldest)
Ionic Column
The second Greek order (the middle)
Corinthian Column
The third type of Greek order
Columns are the post part of construction;
the Greeks also modified the lintel part.

influenced the Roman architecture
that followed.
