What is Health Vault?
Health Vault is a on-line personal health
record system
 Health information stored in one central
location
 Provides easy access to patient
information such as current
medications, past medical
history (PMA) and allergies

What is HealthVault?
Users can upload patient data from
compatible devices to a Health Vault
record
 Patient information can be viewed from a
portable device
 Healthcare issues can be viewed by
physicians/nurses from a computer to
track progress (Microsoft, 2009)

Hardware

 TRUEtrack and TRUEread family of blood
glucose monitors
 Microlife USB cable

oximeter

Omron Blood Pressure Monitor
This monitor automatically inflates with
the push of a button
 Includes IntelliSense technology
automatically, which determines the
correct amount of pressure
 The result is uploaded to your
HealthVault account

and simple to use


Heart 360
A computer is used to upload data, such
as blood pressure readings to HealthVault
 After plugging in the monitor, the blood
pressure readings are automatically sent
to a HealthVault record
 Then blood pressure can be tracked in
one location

Usability of Software
HealthVault Connection Center simply
needs to be uploaded to a computer
 Information is automatically uploaded to a
HealthVault account
 After the initial set-up, HealthVault is
simple to use
(Microsoft, 2009)

Health Vault

pharmacists, and health insurance
providers
 Allows personal health information to be
viewed anywhere on-line
 Configuration – access to a computer

(Mastrian & McGonigle, 2009)

Recommendation
I would recommend this system to
others utilizing this trend
 Easy to use/access
 Fast and convenient way to keep all
personal medical records at your
fingertips
 Safe and confidential
Advantages





Free account to store health information
Healthcare providers can store health
information in one location
Choices regarding who has access to
personal health information is controlled by
account owner.
Leads to more informed/responsible
healthcare decisions
Has specialized search engine designed to
give relevant health information
Disadvantages
Privacy issues = Data hacking and stolen
identity issues
 Health information could be lost or
damaged
 Loss of the human touch

Legal/Ethical Issues
Privacy issues
 Hackers can gain access to personal
health information
 Not a covered entity or business
associate as defined HIPAA
 Search engine used to obtain health
information should NOT be used in place
of a physician

Nursing Informatics
Basic knowledge of computers
 Knowledge of software/hardware related
to HealthVault
 Knowledge of how to upload data from
various sources

