Diabetes Awareness in the Latino
Community
Minerva Garcia
Alejandra Marasco
California State University, Northridge
Facts
Latinos compromise almost 13% of the population and is the
fastest growing ethnic group in the US. (U.S. Census Bureau,
2000).
Type 2 diabetes among Latinos is at least twice than that of
non-Latino Whites (National Center of Health Statistics,
2000).
Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney disease, blindness, nontraumatic lower-limb amputations, and cardiac disease. It is
also the seventh cause of death in the United States (DeCoster,
Vaughn & Cummings, 2005).
Type 2 diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death in Latino
women and the sixth leading cause of mortality in Latino men
(Reimann et al., 2004).
Unmet Need
Based on the unmet need we found that: current
services conflict with work schedules, it lacks bilingual
facilitators and is not well advertised.
Goal for intervention
To meet the need of the Latino diabetic population at
Olive View Medical Center by offering health/nutrition
classes in Spanish.

To obtain our goal, we will hire effective and caring staff
to advocate and help the Latino community in the
language of preference.

Argument of why our program should be
funded
In the United States alone, 16 million people have
diabetes.
According to the World Health Organization, the
prevalence of this disease will continue to increase
rapidly.
This disease demands immediate attention because 4
out of 5 diabetic patients seeking emergency room
services are due to health complications related to their
diabetes.
This program will provide adequate educational tools to
patients in Spanish that will allow them to become more
self-aware and live a healthy lifestyle with this disease.
