 1The
problems and failure of education caused
the Thai government to reform Thai education.
2The 27th prime minister of Thailand, Mr. Apisit
Vejjajiva, revealed that the average number of
years of Thai education is 9; whereas, other
countries it is 12-16. 3The achievement in
mathematics, science, English, and Thai were
lower than standard. 4Thus, he pushed for the
second Thai education reform by providing free
education for 15 years (allocating 18,000 million
Baht) as well as keeping up the quality of
education. 5It would be difficult to imagine that
anyone would be reluctant to support his
proposal.

1. What is the short term for the nasogastric tube? _______________
2. When was the term "nasogastric" coined? _____________________
1
Nasogastric tube: A tube that is passed through the nose
and down through the nasopharynx and esophagus into the stomach.
The abbreviation is NG tube. It is a flexible tube made of rubber or
plastic, and it has bidirectional potential. It can be used to remove
5
the contents of the stomach, including air, to decompress the
stomach, or to remove small solid objects and fluid, such as poison,
from the stomach. An NG tube can also be used to put substances
into the stomach, and so it may be used to place nutrients directly
10 into the stomach when a patient cannot take food or drink by
mouth.
The word "nasogastric" is a hybrid of the Latin "naso-" from
"nasus" for nose or snout and the Greek "gastric" from "gaster"
meaning the paunch or belly. The term "nasogastric" was coined in
1942.
3. What are the purposes of the nasogastric tube?
