What Does Mutual Understanding
Mean?
We need to know the exact meaning of ''Mutual
Understanding'' to understand our topic.

Part of Speech: noun
Definition: shared understanding
Synonym: agreement
HOW TOURISM HELPS MUTUAL
UNDERSTANDING ?
Tourism helps you to know different people and their
cultures.
While you are recognizing each other, at the same
time you overcome your prejudices.
Creating Europe Awareness


Europe is one of the most
popular continents in the world
as a tourist attraction. People
come from Australia,Asia, North
& South America and Africa to
see the the joint of all the
nations.
This is an amazing opportunity
to overcome the prejudices.
We listed some ways to cope
with prejudices.
As we can see from the table, 7 of 10 most visited countries in the
world are in Europe.

Creating Europe Awareness:
What Can We Do?

We can organize exchange projects for young
people to show them that we are not so
different and they can learn and respect other
cultures.
Like; Comenius, Erasmus, Europe in Exchange
etc.
Creating Europe Awareness:
What We Can Do?


There may be a group of people who has been
chosen by their ministry of culture and tourism,
can show their traditions and teach the other
tourists their own handworks, knittings, farming
styles etc. free of charge.
This also helps thousands
people to get a job and
these activities attracts the
new tourists to come their
country.

Creating Europe Awareness:
What We Can Do?
According to the questionnaires, people said these
five reasons to come to Europe.
1. Diversity of cultures
2. Several thousand years of history can be explored
3. Architectural must-dos in almost all countries
4. Beautiful sceneries
5. A lot of people speak at least basic English
Creating Europe Awareness:
What We Can Do?


So we can make researches about which countries'
citizens visit our country. And we can develop our
plans and prepare attractions for those countries.
For example in Turkey,
We should prepare brochures in German
and train our tourism guides and teach
Them German and German traditions
We should also encourage the other
nations to come to Turkey. We can
hire guides who speak their language
and find out what we are doing wrong.
Creating Europe Awareness:
What We Can Do?
We know that we can create amazing things under
pressure. So why don't we organize competitions
about respecting other nations' traditions? The
ministries' of the countries can ask people from
other nations to make a short film about their
country and find the cultural differences and
similarities between her/his country's. If he/she
wins the competition, He/she will win a trip to that
country.
Creating Europe Awareness:
What We Can Do?
A project has been done in Istanbul with the
sponsorship of Turkish Airlines. 5 photographer
came to Istanbul to take photos of people and the
buildings. And these photos were shared in social
media. With this project, more people wanted to
visit Turkey. The tourists could also join this project.

TOURISM’S CONTRIBUTION; ETHICAL VALUES
1. Tourism activities should be conducted in harmony with the attributes and traditions of
the host regions and countries and in respect for their laws, practices and customs.
2. The host communities, on the one hand, and local professionals, on the other, should
acquaint themselves with and respect the tourists who visit them and find out about
their lifestyles, tastes and expectations; the education and training imparted to
professionals contribute to a hospitable welcome
3. It is the task of the public authorities to provide protection for tourists and visitors and
their belongings; they must pay particular attention to the safety of foreign tourists
owing to the particular vulnerability they may have
4. When travelling, tourists and visitors should not commit any criminal act or any act
considered criminal by the laws of the country visited
5. Tourists and visitors have the responsibility to acquaint themselves, even before their
departure, with the characteristics of the countries they are preparing to visit
Tourism development has affected people in the tourist destinations both socially
and economically. The affects are both positive and negative and vary in how
significant they are for people.
One positive social effect from tourism generated
earnings is the increase in investment in the local community, improving the
standard of living for locals, which is essential for further development.
This can lead to an overall improvement in the welfare of the people, providing
improved health and education services
There is a close correlation between economic and social significance, however,
often positive economic affects result in negative social impacts, both equally
significant. One example of this is the growth of tourism in an area like Byron Bay in
Australia, where the demand for land to accommodate this growth has resulted in
increased property values (demand and supply) which have forced locals to move to
cheaper areas. The property values in Byron Bay doubled in less than 10 years,
resulting in increasing rates etc….
Australia, Byron Bay
This impact also occurred in Spain where tourism
where some communities experience growth in tourism of 18% and an increase in
property values leading to local people being displaced. Sociologists have studied this
phenomenon and note a loss of sense of identity and general lowering of self-esteem,
which can lead to other social issues (crime), especially evident among
young people who resent the tourists….
VALUES INFLUENCED BY TOURISM
PHYSİCAL INFLUENCE
 «Cultural deterioration, damage to cultural heritage may arise from vandalism,
littering, pilferage and illegal removal of cultural heritage items or by changing the
historical landscape that surrounds it
 Resource use conflicts, such as competition between tourism and local populations
for the use of prime resources like water and energy because of scarce supply
 Conflicts with traditional land-uses may also arise in coastal areas, when the
construction of shoreline hotels and tourist faculties cuts off access for the locals to
traditional fishing grounds and even recreational use of the areas»
CULTURE CLASHES
Cultural clashes means difference between two different people.
«Cultural clashes may further arise through:
Economic inequality - between locals and tourists who are spending more than they usually do at home.
Irritation due to tourist behaviour - Tourists often, out of ignorance or carelessness, fail to respect local customs
and moral values. As an example, we can see the case of Catalunya. Catalunya has always been a worldwide
force in the tourism industry. However, it has promoted a kind of tourism based on sun, fun and drinking. The
kind of people that come to the country are only looking for those clichés and do not care about the local
values. These are people who, in their own country would never shout in the street, drink alcohol all day or
break all shopping windows they would find on their way "home". In Lloret de Mar, in the Costa Brava, the
situation is now untenable
(Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona).
Job level friction - due to a lack of professional training, many low-paid tourism-jobs go to local people while higherpaying and more prestigious managerial jobs go to foreigners or "urbanized" nationals.»
CRIME
With the growth of the cities and countries, tourist numbers are increasing. So
tourists are going to places with valuable things like phones, money etc. These
are increasing the attraction of crime.
LEAKAGE
«The direct income for an area is the amount of tourist expenditure that remains
within its borders. Very often, this is a relatively small amount due to "leakage" the amount of money that is drained out of an area due to tax payments, profits
and wages paid outside the area and expenditure for imports.»
Infrasturucture cost
Tourism is a source of money for the government and taxpayers. Because of that they
want to build new airports etc. to take more tourists. «Possibilities to provide tax
breaks and other financial advantages which are costly activities. Public
resources spent on subsidized infrastructure or tax breaks may reduce
government investment in other critical areas such as education and health. «
INCREASE IN PRICES
Because of the tourists sometime local residents affected by increase of prices. So
the land values grow. This is one of the biggest reason why local people
sometimes can not afford their daily needs and also result in a dominance by
outsiders in land markets and in-migration that erodes economic opportunities
for the locals.»
TOURISM AND LANGUAGE

Effects of Universal
Language
As we all know,
language is the
strongest
communication tool
between people and
our midpoint is
English.
WE USE ENGLISH AS A UNIVERSAL
LANGUAGE AND SOMETIMES WE
FORGET ABOUT THE COUNTRY’S
OWN LANGUAGE. THIS IS NOT A BIG
PROBLEM AS LONG AS WE CAN
COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER.
BUT THIS KEEPS US AWAY FROM
THE COUNTRY CULTURE.
THE BIGGEST REASON FOR A
MIDPOINT OF LANGUAGE IS
TOURISM. FOR TOURISM, WE SEE
THIS AS A REQUIREMENT. WE GO
COURSES, WE TAKE LESSONS
AND WE ALWAYS TRY TO LEARN
MORE LANGUAGES THAN WE
HAVE LEARNT.
English remains the dominant language of international business and global
communication through the influence of global media and the former British
Empire that had established the use of English in regions around the world
such as North America, India, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. However,
English is not the only language used in global organizations such as in the EU
or the UN, because many countries do not recognize English as a universal
language.
Languages and tourism shape the everyday life
of tourism as well as its tactics and strategies.
Speaking the language of the hosts could
deepen the potential for tourists' relations with
another people and place.
Universal language may refer to a historical language spoken and
understood by all or most of the world's population. In some
contexts, it refers to a means of communication said to be
understood by all living things, beings, and objects alike. It may be
the idea of an international language for communication between
groups speaking different primary languages. In other conceptions, it
may be the primary language of all speakers, or the only existing
language.
There are lots of examples in the world. When people visit the
countries, they usually speak english or the main universal
languages which are spoken by most of the world’s population. If
we want to give a little example, we can show this trip. We came to
Spain for our school project but we speak in english as a necessity.
It is a general habit that we use in our lives. But actually we have to
learn some vocabulary and learn about the country, live the
atmosphere and the culture of the country.

ATTENTION!
