Individual Socialization and
Occupation
Family – Brainstorming…

With your elbow partners (groups of 2-3) – describe the meaning of the
word “Family” :

What is family?

Why is it important?
The Family

Is the first environment in which people are socialized

Families are the primary role models for children

Family background determines the opportunities available to children and in
turn the paths that may be available to them

Children also acquire the status of their family
How else are we socialized?

Schools certainly have curriculum obligations (outlined by the Ministry of
Education).

Teachers are required to deliver curriculum and evaluate learning

With your elbow partners, discuss what other ‘social’ purposes school has
on children / youth.
School

Allows children to separate from their families and to develop
independence

The school’s curriculum, teachers, and peers all have a role in the
socialization of children

Children acquire knowledge and develop skills necessary for becoming an
adult
Anticipatory Socialization

As children grow older, they are given ‘experiences’ that will help them prepare
for life as an adult.

Families:



Model behaviour and give feedback to its members
Nurture its members, so as to create a ‘safety net’
Schools:




Develop learning through curriculum
Prepare students for receiving guidance different authority figures
Allow children to begin developing their identity
Encourage social interactions with peers
Anticipatory Socialization – continued…

Do you have a part time job? If so, why?

Is your part time job, one that you could see yourself continuing through
until you decide to retire?
Part Time Employment
•
What motivates you to work part time?
•
Work is both a way to earn an income and a major contributor to self esteem.
•
Families, school, community and society all have an impact on choice of career.
•
Part time work allows teenagers to take on responsibility roles in the
community.
•
Sociologists report that money is the biggest motivator for part time work
(McGraw – Hill Ryerson, 2010)
Part time employment continued…
•
It has been reported that part time work has little effect on young people’s
work values.
•
It does have a stronger impact on girls’ values than boys’.
•
If teens have a job where they are given responsibility, work with others,
and manage their time, the intrinsic value of work becomes more
important.
Attitudes Values and Beliefs

Families transmit the basic values and attitudes that determine the liklihood
of success in adulthood.

Parents level of education, income and employment history have an impact
on a child’s income as an adult

Based on previous class discussions, why do you think this is so?
Attitudes values and beliefs continued…

To find work rewarding a persons abilities must be challenged.

It is through their families that young people learn to challenge themselves
and to develop self reliance and responsibility.
The End
Looking back to inform our future…

As you complete your genogram assignment, what trends do you see in
education? family size? employment? habits?
