Mary Louise had a plethora of
interesting friends who ranged
from hunters to sociologists to
political activists and a beauty
queen! Her closest friend, named
Laverne, did not finish school in
order to start a family early in her
life. They remained in touch
throughout Mary’s years of
travels. Laverne’s greatest
influence on Mary Louise was
imparting her love of learning and
encouraging Mary to continue the
education that Laverne was
unable to pursue.
Grew Up in Alaska– from
birth to the age of 23, she
lived in Juneau. From her
cold balcony, she could see
Russia. At age 23, she left to
travel the world.

MacMillan did not enjoy
much of a social life
given the unpleasant
temperature for outdoor
activities and the
extensive nature of her
studies.
Mary Louise serves
in the Peace Corps in
Ethiopia from age 26
to 28. There she was
a Natural Resource
Conservation
specialist. She taught
Ethiopians about
self-sustaining
agriculture.
Mary Louise went to The
University of Alaska in
Anchorage where she majored
in Agriculture and Animal
Husbandry. She made the
Dean’s List for all four years of
her time in school. She also won
the “It’s Easy Being Green Prize”
for her environmentallyconscious projects.
