ARO Overview
• The Army’s main funding agency for basic
research
• Needs and opportunity driven, primarily fund
extramural research
– Close collaboration with Army Research Lab and other
Army organizations
– Potential ROI
– Balanced research: near-term, mid-term, and longterm needs
• ARO Web Site: http://www.aro.army.mil
Driving Force
“Heavy forces must be more strategically deployable and
more agile with a smaller logistical footprint, and light
forces must be more lethal, survivable and tactically
mobile. Achieving this paradigm will require innovative
thinking about structure, modernization efforts and
spending.”
- The Chief of Staff, Army

CISD Thrust Areas
1. Autonomous Systems
2. Secure and Robust Information Systems
3. Networked Information Processing
Research and develop methods to facilitate the creation of networked information
systems over band limited mobile, wireless networks. This includes processing of
sensor information, multi-hop mobile, wireless communication networks, fusing
and interpreting data, and processing and presenting data for decision making.
Information includes sensor data, and real-time voice, text, graphics, and video.
The focus is on theory and fundamental limits of the problems as well as
implementable solutions.
ISP Program Research Areas:
–
Interpretation of sensor data, including multiple sensor modalities.
–
Analysis, fusion, reduction, and representation of data for decision making.
–
Data compression and coding, network and quality of service aware.
Program Goal
Develop image feature extraction and modeling,
image/video compression, sensor fusion, and energy
efficient processing to provide increased performance
and capability for processing signals, data, and
information to enhance the warfighters’ decision
making, situation awareness, command and control and
methods to improve targeting and the performance of
weapons systems.
