National 4 Numeracy Unit
Practice Assessment Split into Topic Areas
1.1 Selecting and Using Notation and Units
Q1 Anja has £50 to spend in a shop. She sees a dress which is priced at £65 with a
label for 25% off. Will she be able to afford it, and if so, how much change
should she get?
Q2 The temperature in New York one day was -7°C. On that same day it was 12°C
in London. What is the difference in temperature between these cities?
Q3 Andrew leaves his house at 9:40am. It takes him 3 hours and 36 minutes to get
to Glasgow. In 24-hour time, what time does he arrive in Glasgow?
1.2 Carrying out Calculations
Q1 It costs £8.95 per person to eat at the China Buffet King. A school trip of 38
people are going to eat here, how much will it cost in total?
Q2 Jack is travelling from London, by aeroplane, a distance of 5120km. If the
aeroplane travels a speed of 600 kilometres per hour, how long will the journey
take? Round your answer to 2 significant figures.
Q3 A recipe for blueberry scones requires the ratio of blueberries to flour to be 3:5.
If you use 180g of blueberries, how many grams of flour should you use?
Q4 Blair has an essay to write for homework which is to be 1400
words long. He must finish it in two nights. On the first night
he is 3/5 of the way finished. How many words will he need to
write the second night?
1.3 Reading Measurements from a scale
Q1 What is the weight represented on this scale in
kilograms?
Q2 Measure accurately the length of this picture
to the nearest millimetre:
1.4 Interpreting Measurements to Make Decisions
Q1 Fiona is looking for a new mobile phone package. She needs to have at least
200 minutes of calls a month, 300 texts and internet usage unlimited. Which
package should she choose and how much will it cost her?

Q2 Barrie travels to work 5 days a week by train. A return ticket is £5.45. He is
offered a five-week ticket for £135. Would Barrie save money by buying the
five-week offer? Give reasons for your answer.
1.5 Explaining Decisions based on Results of Calculations
Q1 You have been asked to buy wallpaper for your parents’ house. You have been
given £40 to buy all the paper to cover two walls at 5m by 3.5m, and two walls at
4m by 3.5m. The paper comes in rolls of 100cm by 500cm costing £3.59 each.
Will you be able to buy the paper? Explain why.
2.1 Extracting and Interpreting Data from Graphs
Q1 The graph shows the income for people in
Western Africa. How many people earn
less than $500?
Q2 The line graph shows the speed of a bike
from the start of a race.
a. What speed was the bike going after
3 seconds?
b. What distance did the bike cover after
6 seconds?
c. Can you explain why the graph starts
low and gains height quickly?
2.2 Making and Explaining Decisions based on Graphical Information
Q1 You have been asked to arrange a sports day for
your school. Based on the bar graph provided,
what is the best sport to organise?
Give a reason for your answer.
Q2 The line graph shows the rainfall for two
cities. If you had to choose between the
two to go on a cycling holiday, which
month would you go, and where would
you go?
Give a reason for your answer.
2.3 Making and Explaining Decisions based on Probability
Q1 The following are results from a school for the number of pupils who passed
their exams:
Mathematics – out of 80 pupils, 65 of them passed
Art and Design – out of 60 pupils, 40 of them passed
If you were the deputy head teacher, which subject would you focus on more to
improve the number of pupils passing? Explain your answer.
Q2 A business carried out a survey to find out where people were spending their
money:
130 people buy online
200 people buy in store
50 don’t buy
The company concluded that 53% of people are more likely to shop in
store. Is this correct?
