Nonverbal
Communication
Non-verbal Communication

communication
• Be able to demonstrate signs of authority
and confidence
Where can you apply this stuff?

Public speaking
Just to impress (like a hot date!)
Non-verbal Communication
• What can we use nonverbal language to
accomplish?
• The main use is to show people two things:
• Confidence
• Authority
• Basically, you send out the signals of being in
charge, being the boss…
• This is SUBTLE – you do it easily
• VERY valuable skill in a job!
• Act like someone who should be in charge, and
you’ll probably find yourself there eventually…
Non-verbal Communication
• How do you convey confidence without words?
• Eye contact
• Most important!
• If you can look someone in the eye and
speak, you’re probably not lying and you
probably know what you are taking about
• Don’t touch any part of your body above
the shoulders
• Fixing your tie, playing with jewelry, or
fixing your hair all distract from eye contact
Cool, Calm, and Collected
• Show that you are relaxed
• Smooth gestures, easy stance
• Stand tall, but not rigid
• Identify and remove your stress behaviors
• Each person has certain things they do that can
tell others they’re stressed
• Learn the things that you do when you’re tense
or nervous and control them
Non-verbal Communication
• How do you convey authority without words?
• When greeting someone:
• Firm, correct handshake
• A firm handshake shows power and
confidence, a weak one shows
nervousness and weakness
• Grasp firmly without pumping your hand or
turning your wrist. Shake three times and
release.
Handshake Customs
• Old handshake customs
• Men shake each other’s hands firmly
• Men shake ladies’ hands by gripping
fingers lightly (if at all!)
• Ladies shake each others hands as they
choose
New Version
• Men shake each other’s hands firmly
• Men let the lady offer her hand and
observe how she does it: Palm down
means use the old custom. Palm sideways
means shake normally.
• Women offer a hand shake just as men
should.
• Make eye contact when greeting
Non-verbal Communication
• How do you convey authority without words?
• When speaking or listening:
• Beware of tilting your head to one side or
shifting your eyes when asking or answering
• This shows doubt or hesitation. Stand
straight up and look people directly and
evenly in the eye
• Eyes up say ‘I don’t know’
• Eyes to the side say ‘I’m lying’
• Right = Thinking
• Left = Lying
What does your posture say?
• Slouching shows disinterest
• Sit up squarely in your chair, shoulders
straight
• Rest your forearms on the table, if there is
one
• This posture send the message: “I will not
be moved”
