children [AC 1.1]
Starter activity
Time: 10 mins

children [AC 1.1]
Speech, language and communication
Speech:
• Initially this will be the gurgling and cooing that a baby
produces
• The next stage would be babbling, when a baby is
experimenting with sounds and produces blends such as ‘ma’
and ‘da’
• Ultimately the child will be able to speak fluently with
expression and without hesitating.

Speech, language and communication
Language:
• Language includes expressive language and understanding
• Expressive language is when the child is able to link words
together to build up sentences which follow the rules of
grammar
• Understanding is processing and making sense of what people
say.

Pairs activity
Time: 15 mins
In pairs consider your own definitions of the terms: Speech, Language
and Communication.
• What areas does ‘Speech’ cover?
• What areas does ‘Language’ cover?
• What areas does ‘Communication’ cover?
Write a one-sentence definition for each of the three terms.
Produce a poster to show what each of your definitions covers. Be
creative and include illustrations, mind maps, etc.

children [AC 1.2]
Language and communication development
• Babies communicate their needs from the moment they are
born.
• Initially their communication is a series of different cries and
facial expressions.
• Babies and young children soon learn to communicate their
needs in a variety of ways.
• All children are individual so although there is an expected
pattern of development all children will develop at their own
rate.

Group activity
Time: 25 mins
Create a development chart to show the stages of language and
communication development from birth to 7 years.
Separate the chart into the following age ranges:
Birth
1–2 years
1–3 months
2–3 years
3–6 months
3–4 years
6–9 months

Reading development
Children will all learn to read and write at different ages but
there is an expected pattern that most children will follow:
• Under 1 – babies will show short bursts of interest in picture
books
• 1–2 years – toddlers will show more interest in books and will
begin to point to pictures, imitate sounds and reach to turn
pages
• 2–3 years – by this age children are enjoying being read to
and will choose favourite books, they will know which way up
a book should go and will sit and look at a book by
themselves.

children [AC 1.2]
Reading development
• 3–4 years – at this age children will join in with familiar stories
and can anticipate rhyming or repetitive stories. Children will
begin to recognise logos or brand names.
• 4–5 years – children will now begin to understand that the
words on the page are telling the story, they will be able to
say words that rhyme or alliterate.
• 5–7 years – children’s reading development will develop at a
steady rate and they will be following a recognised reading
scheme in their school.

children [AC 1.3]
Factors which may affect language and communication needs
• Some children may find it difficult to communicate with those
around them.
• They may find it difficult to make themselves understood.
• It may be hard for them to express their thoughts or feelings.
• Communication is a two-way process so some children may
find it hard to understand what is being asked of them.

Pairs activity
Time: 15 mins
There are many factors which may affect a child’s ability to
communicate.

Time: 15 mins
Create a poster to show parents/carers the expected pattern of
development for reading and writing.
Consider:
• Including images or diagrams
• Showing that all children are individual and develop at different
rates

age than others
• Including a brief explanation of ‘emergent literacy’.
