To Increase “Literacy” and Prepare Students for Success

What are the Common Core Standards?
Since 2010, a number of states across the nation have adopted the same standards for
English and Math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
The Common Core State Standards require that students systematically acquire knowledge
in literature and other disciplines through reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Across the English language arts and mathematics standards, skills critical to each content
area are emphasized. In particular, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and
critical-thinking skills are interwoven into the standards.
在英文和数学方面,强调提高以下能力:解决问题,互
相配搭,彼此沟通,批判性思维。
OBJECTIVE: 共同核心目标
就是全国各州采用相同的标准所编的教材。从 K –12 幼稚园到高
中12 年级,教导学生如何把所学的知识,和现实生活连结,让
学生认识到 “全球化”的趋势,并且希望学生都能有充足的能力,
进入大学,完成学业,或者有足够的职业训练,顺利进入职场
就业。总而言之,就是要培养一个有能力的人,过一个成功的
生活。
As of March 31, 2016, there are 46 states that had adopted The
Common Core State Standards.

Understand how to connect their knowledge to the global community.

Utilize their skills as critical and creative thinkers to succeed in any post

Connections Between the Common Core and World
ALanguages
key point in the Mathematics Standards is that not only procedural skill but
also conceptual understanding is important. The same is true with the study of
languages. It is important that language educators move students from simple
to complex language usage as they develop the ability to communicate in
authentic contexts. This progression of language development leads to
academic, formal language usage. (数学和语言学习过程相同点在于,从简单内容教
到复杂内容。就是要达到有 “学术方面”的成果,和“有能力使用正规语言”。)
With regard to the English Language Arts Standards, the goals are virtually
identical to those of world languages. For example, a key point in English
Language Arts is that the standards prepare the learners for “real life
experiences at college and in 21st century careers.” (英文和语言学习过程几
乎完全相同,就是要让学生将所学的知识和真实世界联结,以应付21世纪职业的需要。)
Aligning Common Core and World Language
Standards:
World Language Teachers’ missions are:
--To connect language and culture instructions with global components
--To incorporate state standards into language lessons
--To engage students with diverse cultural themes
--To help students develop higher level critical thinking skills for the real world situation
--To prepare students to become job available
--To foster students language proficiency to become life-long skills
--To bring awareness of multimedia trend in 21st century
Strategies:
--Use Culturally Authentic Materials: web based applications and sites
--Apply Three Modes of Communication throughout whole curriculum:
Presentational Communication
Interpersonal Communication
Interpretive Communication
--Utilize technology to Enrich Language Learning: voicethread, moviemaking apps, google docs, google classroom….etc.
Language Acquisition Process :
• Meaningful/Comprehensible Inputs (from daily conversation,
real life situation, textbooks, dramas, movies,…..)
• Student Intakes (through practices, drills, tests,…….)
• Student Outputs (linguistically and pragmatically correct)
