own age may have on you. Peer Pressure can be
positive or negative.
Adolescents with low self esteem can be
particularly influenced by peer pressure

 Group dating offers teens opportunities to interact with
a variety of people while getting to know someone
better
 May lead to steady dating, which can interfere with
developing other healthy relationships

Communication
• Communication: process through which you
send messages and to receive messages from
others.
Good communication skills will help you keep
relationships healthy and form more mature
relationships.

Use “I” messages to avoid placing blame.
Maintain a polite tone in your voice.
Speak directly to the person.
Provide a clear, organized message that
states the situation.

• Give your full attention to the person
talking.
• Focus on the speakers message.
• Indicate your interest.
• Remember what the speaker has
said.
• Use positive body language.

Conflict
• Conflict: a disagreement, struggle, or fight.
When conflicts or disagreements occur rely on the TALK strategy
T-take time out
A-Allow each person to express his or her
opinion uninterrupted
L-let each person take turns asking questions
and clarifying any statements
K-keep brainstorming (talking) to find a good
solution

Conflict and Dating
• In any relationship, people must communicate
in order to have their feelings known and
understood.
• Conflict can occur when two people’s
expectations are different and are not clearly
communicated.
• Effective communication will help you
maintain healthy mature relationships

Lesson 2: Decisions About Sexual
Relationships
It is important to recognize that being physically
attracted to someone and being in love are not
the same thing. Infatuation, or exaggerated
feelings of passion for another person, can
sometimes be mistaken for love.
• Abstinence: a deliberate decision to avoid
harmful behaviors, including sexual activity
and the use of alcohol, tobacco and other
drugs.

Benefits of Abstinence
Abstinence eliminates both persons’ risk of
contracting an STD, including HIV/AIDS
Abstinence is the only 100% effective method
to avoid unplanned pregnancy
Abstinence ensures that you will not go
against your personal values
Abstinence can allow a couple to build a
deeper relationship

Practicing Your Decision to be Abstinent
• Make a detailed list of your reasons for choosing
abstinence
• Discuss your feelings, your decision, and your
expectations of the relationship with your
boyfriend or girlfriend
• Place your self in situations that reinforce your
decision to be abstinent. When dating choose
places to go that will encourage conversation, or
date in groups
• Plan your time together-where you will go, how
long you will stay and what time you will go home
