NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Non-Verbal communication – All aspects of
communications other than words themselves. It
includes not only gestures and body language but
also how we utter words, this includes: Inflection,
pauses, tone, volume, and accent.

Non-Verbal-Communication also includes features
of environments that affect interaction:



Personal objects such as jewelry & clothes
Physical appearance
Facial appearance

Intentional & Non-intentional

with a non-verbal warm embrace

Regulate interaction

The interaction between friends, the turn taking in
conversation is regulated non-verbally. There are
underline non-verbal clues that let the other
person know it is their turn to speak.

Establishes Relationship Level Meanings Non-verbal communication can convey three
dimensions of relationship-level meanings



Responsiveness – eye contact, facial expressions and body posture,
we indicate our interest in others communication.
Liking – non-verbal behaviors are often keen indicators of how
positively/negatively we feel towards others.
Power – non-verbal behaviors to assert dominance and to negotiate
for status and influence.
