What are communication skills?
They are important skills that involve:
 Words- the foundation of effective
communication.
 Gestures- body language is an important part
of sending & receiving messages.
 Delivery- includes tone of voice, timing, &
pacing.
 Symbols- picture is often worth a thousand
words.
Improving your communication
skills can help you get what you
want in life.
Listening Skills
Pay close attention- to a speaker and keep
eye contact so the person knows that you
are really listening.
 Ask questions- this shows your are following
what they are telling you.
 Never interrupt
 Show you understand

Feedback
There are two kinds of feedback
Positive & Negative.
 Positive- Express your approval!
 Negative- Share your issues and work on the
problems.
Keep in mind that overly positive or overly
negative responses usually hurt the
communication.
Face to Face
Good face to face communication can make a
difference at home, at work and in social
situations. Try to:
Be clear and precise
 Watch your posture
 Use appropriate eye contact
 Control your voice

ROADBLOCKS
Overcome communication roadblocks by avoiding
habits that hurt.
For example…
 Making fun of others
 Lecturing
 Taking others’ problems lightly
 Thinking of a response while the other person is
talking
 Giving orders
 Too much advice
Use a WINNING communication
style
Learn to be assertive
 Expressing your feelings &
opinions such as being honest or open.
Understand your rights
 You can say “No” or state your needs & how
you feel.
