About the department
Merged in 2000 from Department of Art History and Graduate Program in Communication to
Art History and Communication Studies (AHCS)
Allowing for independence of both programs which permits students to benefit from teaching
and research of Faculty from both units
Introduced the Minor in Communication Studies in the Fall 2006. No plans currently to
expand into a Major.

Role of the UG Program Directors
Our department has two undergraduate program directors, one for Art History
(Professor Nelson) and one for Communication Studies (Professor Lentz).
They are available for advising on issues relating to academic integrity, study
planning, graduate school preparation and career planning.

Role of the Student Affairs Officer
The Student Affairs Officer, Matt Dupuis, advises students on course selection, the rules
and regulations related to our unit, and general departmental information, such as:
Verification of students records and eligibility for graduation
Registration related assistance
Advising students regarding Museum Internships
Matt holds drop in office hours during the week and you can also see him by
appointment.

Role of the Faculty Advisor
The Faculty Advisors, located in Dawson Hall, are experts in the rules,
regulations, and requirements pertaining to specific degree programs related to
the Arts Faculty.
They provide guidance on program selection, course registration, credit load, and
deadlines.
They also offer help managing academic situations during periods of personal,
financial, or medical problems, by working with students to identify various
possibilities and strategies for making informed decisions.

Multi Track System
Three options to choose from
•Option A (a Major in one department and a Minor in another)
•Options B (a double Major)
•Option C (a Major and a double Minor) (course prefixes must differ)

S/U Option
S/U stands for Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory
One elective course per term may be taken under this option to a
maximum of 10% of the credits taken at McGill to fulfill your degree
The decision must be taken before the Add/Drop period
Courses under S/U will not count towards fulfilling program
requirements
Grade conversion:
Satisfactory (S) – Grades A through C
Unsatisfactory (U) – Grades D and F
Courses under S/U will be excluded from the GPA calculation

Minor in Art History
The Minor in Art History consists of a minimum of 18 credits.
Required course (3 credits)
ARTH 305 Methods in Art History (prerequisites: one 200 level course in Art
History)
Complementary courses (15 credits)
3 credits in Art History at the 200 level (take this first)
12 credits in Art History at the 300 level or above

Major in Art History
The Major in Art History consists of 36 credits.

Complementary courses (15 credits)
Max. 12 credits at 200 level
Min. 3 credits at 400 level
Credits must be selected from at least six of the eight AH
course fields

Possible to take max. 6 credits in Communication Studies, counted towards complementary courses.
ARTH 490 does not count towards the 400-level seminar requirement

Honours in Art History
The Honors Program in Art History consists of 60 credits.
Required course (9 credits)
ARTH 305 – Methods in Art History
ARTH 400 – Selected Methods in Art History
ARTH 401 – Honours Research Paper
Complementary courses (51 credits)
Max. 15 credits at 200-level and Min. 6 credits at 400-level
Credits must be selected from at least six of the eight AH course fields
6 credits in a foreign language or in related disciplines (in consultation with the SAO)
Honours students must maintain a program GPA of 3.30 and a minimum of CGPA of 3.00 overall.
Students should apply for this program after their first year of study, having completed at least 12 credits
in Art History with a minimum GPA 3.30.
To apply students must submit a formal request to the SAO along with a brief statement of intent.
Applications submitted by the end of the second week of the winter term by students in their second year
of study will be granted priority.

Joint Honours in Art History
The Joint Honors Program in Art History consists of 36 cr.
Required course (9 credits)
ARTH 305 – Methods in Art History
ARTH 400 – Selected Methods in Art History
ARTH 401 – Honours Research Paper
Complementary courses (27 credits)
Max. 9 credits at 200-level and Min. 3 credits at 400-level
Credits must be selected from at least six of the eight AH course fields
Admission procedures and GPA requirements are the same as for the Honours program.

400 level Art History courses
ARTH 447 & COMS 497 - Independent Study Courses (3 credits)
Before this course is approved, students must develop their own project
and seek the commitment of a faculty member to supervise their work.
ARTH 490 - Museum Internship Course (3 credits)
Students can only take this course after securing an approved museum (or
related institution) internship. Interested students should consult the
departmental web site: http://www.mcgill.ca/ahcs/ugrad/internship
NOTE: ARTH 490 counts as a complementary course but does not fulfill the 400 level requirement.
There is NO such equivalent for students pursuing the Minor in Communication Studies (only non
credit internships are available).

program.
The Minor in Communication Studies consists of 18
credits (2 courses can be taken outside of McGill, IF
approved ahead of time)

Departmental, degree planning, and museum internship sessions are open to all AHCS students –
info will be sent to you as we get closer to the events.
Matthew Dupuis, Professor Hunter, and Professor Lentz are available to meet during the add/drop
period. Regular advising hours will be posted on the departmental web site and on office doors.
Please note that due to the large volume of email during the add/drop period, you may not receive
a prompt response.
