BARRIER TO
COMMUNICATION...
Nurse will be shown a picture/video of a (poorly) client,
who cannot speak, in bed – typical ward set up –
bedside cabinet etc
Nurse will hear the client being asked (on med round)
“are you in pain?”
Client will appear to ignore nurse
Nurse will be asked – “why is he ignoring you?”
Nurse will have a choice
 Doesn’t want to respond
 Can’t understand
 Is not in pain
By moving the cursor, it will be revealed that there are glasses and a
hearing aid in the cabinet.
There will also be a communication passport hanging off the side of
the cabinet.
Nurse will have to find all three items in order for barrier to be
reduced.
The communication passport will zoom out to show various ways 2 way
communication with this client can take place, i.e. pics for various
things, pain, no pain etc (obviously this relies on his usual carers
having made a relevant passport for him to take to hospital)


Video will finish to show client able to understand
and to convey he is in pain and would like px meds,
because he can see his communication passport, and
can hear what is being asked.
Nurse could be asked what she could do to ensure
better communication opportunity for future i.e.
Ensure client can reach his glasses hearing aid and
passport.
