Barriers And Gateways
Barrier: The Tendency to Evaluate
“We all have a natural urge to judge, evaluate,
and approve (or disapprove) another person’s
statement.”
Gateway: Listening with Understanding
“… seeing the expressed idea and attitude from
the other person’s point of view, sensing how it
feels to the person, achieving his or her frame of
reference about the subject being discussed”
Barriers And Gateways
Why is the Listening Approach Not Used?
• Lack of Courage
- You might see things his way; find that he
has influenced your attitudes
• Heightened Emotions
- Use third party, lay aside feelings and listen
to each person
• Too Large a Group
Barriers And Gateways
The greatest barrier to effective communication is
the tendency to evaluate what another person is
saying and therefore to misunderstand or to not
really “hear”
Checking the natural tendency to judge yields a
better understanding of the person with whom you
are communicating
A better understanding of the other person’s point of
view in turn helps you communicate better
